so my friend head gasket has blown on there truck and they cant afford to pay a real mechanic to do the job. i have done 4 head gasket jobs and said i do it for them for less than the shop. the shop told them 900-1,000$ for the job. i am wondering what would be a reasonable price for me to charge them to do it.

Parts plus $35 and hour labor as a starting point. You ought to be able to do the job in around ten hours or so. For a good friend, free, of course.

My gut feeling price is right in there with TC's advice. Of course that's not including having the head checked out by a machine shop.

Yeah. A v6 Mitsubishi can take that long just to change plugs!

"Now the problem you have is that when you have the unerring certainty of machinery, it is a machine. When something has foibles, it won’t handle properly, that gives it a particularly human quality because it makes mistakes. And that’s how you can build a relationship with a car that other people won’t get."

Having volunteered such things in the past, that turned into major disasters (you fix it once you own the damn thing. And small claims will reinforce that). Then the State will get on your ass for no license. And the whole thing devolves from there.) I'd walk away very very fast. RUN away as fast as you can.

Same thing as don't "fix" your friend's computer. Anything goes wrong for the next decade is your fault. This is true!

I don't even want to "fix" my wife's computer. Because if something doesn't work, I'll hear about it for a long long time.
