I would like to get a 1/2" extra long, maybe ratcheting, combination wrench. Meaning it's 11-12" long, not the normal 8" or so. (most mfgrs thing 9" is extra long).

Amazon finds dozens of "extra long" such but none of the descriptions list exactly how long the SOB is. And "extra long
is not a size. Asking Amazon something like this is like asking my cat to not pee on the couch. They pay attention but have no idea WTF you are saying.

I want it to get down below the exhaust manifold behind the heat shield to snug up tappet cover screws without pulling intake.

have not had luck searching w/google either. Not interested in a set nor metric.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Hiya Mac, did some searching, looked at all the normal joints and the only one I found was a Gearwrench,UPC code 082171859564,$26.65 on their web site. 11.3" long, 12 point ratcheting. Kind of spendy but all the others just didn't measure up, mostly 8"-9" max length. Sears carries their products but I couldn't isolate out individual wrenches on their site. Hope this helps.

Make one. Buy two cheap wrenches from Harbor Freight or some other cheapo place. Cut one in half, cut out the needed length from the other, weld in the piece from the sacrificial wrench, done. It's a single purpose tool so it doesn't have to be pretty.

That's a good idea. If you make the cuts long/short you could weld the two short pieces together for a shorty wrench, too.

Any tool specialty store like Northern tool or those specializing in heavy duty tools will have what you kneed. but I got to admit the two wrench approach is the cheapest. I just hope that you have excellent welding skills. Because if that weld breaks when you have pressure on the wrench, well you know the answer.

082171859564 gear wrench. Or sku #85956. Thanks for that Robert. I found it before but couldn';t find it again.

Amazon ($18) and other vendors show this as 8.6" long. GearWrench shows it as 11+

Who to believe? (or rather, would vendors supply the 85956 item or something else?)

Amazon's search ability is pretty crummy when getting into specifics.

Will have to think about it.

Chopping up two wrenches to make one, then hauling off to a welder isn't really cheaper by much.

Maybe I should limber up my oxy-acet torch set and, as my wife says, try to burn down the house.<G>

Maybe weld pieces to a piece of strap iron. 25 ft-lbs is all I need out of it anyway,.
