After driving my car today for a few hours or so, an exhaust became very noticeable. It coming from the engine bay, as I can smell it while driving. There are only two spots that I know of for the leak, the connection of the manifold to the head and the connection to the pipe from the manifold. Unless there is a hole somewhere.

I have read a few ways to find an exhaust leak.
1. Seafoam spray in the carbs looking for white smoke.
2. Using a hose to and try find hear for a hiss.

I am wondering what ways you use to find an exhaust leak.

Bill.

Crank it up in the dark and look for the fire coming out when you rev it up. That also makes you really want to fix it. While your there see if there are any sparks flying around your plug cables and coil, just a maintenance tool.

I run my hand near the pipes and gaskets. Sometimes you can feel the exhaust coming out. A spray bottle on mist setting will also detect air movements where your hand will not fit.

Stuff a banana up the tail pipe, or.... have a lovely assistant cover the tail pipe so that 100% of the exhaust tries to exit from the leaky spot.

I've wrapped aluminum foil tightly around the area between manifold and front pipe and pipe to muffler near the rear axle. In both cases, the foil quieted the car while testing...and...best of all...trapped the offending sooty exhaust leak. Unwrap the foil and let the black soot confirm your prognosis. It told me that it was time to lean out my carbs too!
