So I've had some 90 weight gear oil on the shelf for a while. I was under the car today, for another issue, and took a look at my differential. First thing I noticed it that it must be leaking due to all the crud on it, I couldn't even see the plugs at first. Once I did uncover them I could see that the plugs are different than those on the tranny. Is this normal? What tool, and size tool, do I use to get them off? And yes I know to make sure the fill plug comes off before opening the drain.

TIA.

3/8 extension you may have to grind it a little. Use GL4 not GL5 gear oil.

I believe the size is roughly 1/2 inch. I took a cheap 1/2" socket extension (maybe 3/8" I forget) and took a little off of 2 sides of the square end with my grinder for a prefect fit.

I just looked and I do indeed have GL5. What's the difference? Will it hurt to use what I have? Of course it wasn't expensive so its not a huge deal to get the other, but just wondering, and trying to save a trip as well.

GL5 is not a replacement for GL4 gear oil. The GL5 is not good enough to protect the sensible metal (bronze) in the MG' rear axle only GL4 is capable.

You could only put GL4; you could go where there is farming tractor part, motocycle part to buy some, I know in Montreal it was difficult to find some I have to order one week in advance from NAPA store they don't have that in stock normally or you could go penzoil lube express they could change the oil in 20-25 minutes they have GL4 in most of their store.

so....i went looking, on-line, at Napa, Advance Auto and Autozone and yes, the GL4 is not easily found. I did see that there is some synthetic made by Valvoline that says it's for GL4 and 5. i'm guess that will work?

As long as it says it meets GL4 specs, you should be good. For instance, Royal Purple's MaxGear oil states:
Quote: Max Gear is recommended for use in truck and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. It is non-corrosive to soft yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper, etc.) and synchronizer safe. Specially designed to extend gear and bearing life, Max Gear provides superior corrosion protection over competing conventional and synthetic gear oils.

1/2" is sometimes a tight fit. If yours is, a wobble extension fits in easily. Best of luck. Basil 707.762.0974 basiladams@yahoo.com

The plugs are tapered internally and there are proper tools for the job.

Just as well I checked you had the right tool Ernie after all it's been discussed a fair few times. FWIW as noted previously replacement plugs #6k499 appear to be counter sunk hex

The tool is correct for the standard plugs Barrie and that is what Curtis has but if yours or those of others have been replaced with something else then that is of course a different matter.

The replacement in your photo doesn't even look to be tapered.

No IIRC it's not tapered Which is a bit odd as it seems that you could just tighten it through the diff casing - I stopped tightening when it was flush. That's what MGOC sent when I was ordering from them and that's a #6K499 as used on both diffs.

Curtis, here's one option. That's what I'm putting in:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GFGVSY0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It seems "pricey" but I just want to get everything wrapped up before winter.
