My son Colin just purchased a 1966 Mustang (sorry, not an MG) and tried to get it insured by Hagarty but was turned down because his wife Mel had her car stolen last year. Have any of you had this happen through Hagarty? I won't be insuring with them for sure.

We have had JC Taylor classic insurance for 4 years now, MGB & GT6. Have had no issues or problems (JC Taylor is connected to Foremost, somehow connected to Farmers Ins since it was referred from them & I pay our Farmers agent for the JC Taylor policy (great service so far - primary car (Acura MDX 4WD) & truck (Toyota T100 4WD) is covered by Farmers). Best of luck.

Hmmm..So his Wife was the victim of Car Theft last year. I'm puzzled as to why that has any bearing on providing your Son with insurance. Recent News Reports disclosed Insurance Companies charging Widows and Divorcees increased Rates. They responded saying it was a science of ' Risk Management '. I recently insured 5 Vehicles with Hagerty. Full Coverage / Agreed Value at 50% of Geico's Liability only costs.......So I'm very happy. I looked into Hagerty after reading good reviews from guys here. I would be very interested in hearing Hagerty's reasoning on this issue. They were so easy to work with....I almost feel like calling them for their input on this issue.

From reading anecdotal reports on here, it seems that there can be some variability in the initial policy answers received from Hagerty, based on who you talk to.
I have had nothing but top rate service at a reasonable price from Hagerty.
Your son may want to talk to another Hagerty agent or ask to talk to a supervisor. The answer he received doesn't sound right to me, if what you presented is the whole story
“Ideological certainty easily degenerates into an insistence upon ignorance". Daniel Patrick Moynihan
In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.
Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

I am equally confused by their refusal. The stolen car was parked in their garage and was taken when the house was broken into. Since then they have installed a burglar alarm. Otherwise both of them have good driving records. My son is a business man and his wife is a school teacher. No high risk behavior from either of them. Just don't get it but there are plenty of other insurance companies. The reason they went to Hagarty is because the fellow who owned the car before had used Hagarty. I used JC Taylor in the past and plan to contact them when my car is finally ready for the road later this summer.

I will give you another way to get to the bottom of this refusal. Bear in mind that I have not worked with this firm or fellow, but he did come and give a talk at the Eastside MG Car Club Northwest Centre meeting a couple of months ago. A couple of folks from the meeting have used him for Haggerty Coverage and were quite pleased with his handling their insurance.

I am with Hagerty right now and am happy. I used to have Continental Western Group. Was not unhappy, just got better rates with Hagerty. I will say this though. There are A LOT of collector car insurers out there. Grundy is another, along with about a dozen or more I could rattle off. They are a dime a dozen as far as I am concerned. None of them are really insurance companies. They are just brokers that have other insurance companies underwrite the actual insurance. What distinguishes one from the other will be price and the different coverages, towing, glass, etc.
Hagerty just had the best of everything all in one and its been very easy to deal with them with multiple cars. Ironically my broker for the DD is the one that moved me to them from Continental.
To answer your question, yes I have seen people turned down because of everything from driving record to past claims. The underwriters look at these things when factoring in risk. They are in the business of making money, not paying you money. I'm not sure how hold your son is, but they do factor in age, marital status, credit, location, past claims, other drivers, driving record, you name it. I'd be willing to bet there was a certain threshold they reached in terms of risk that made them too risky to insure.
His best bet is to contact his current broker first. If he is not using one, then contact his DD insurer. Often times they will have a Collector Car insurance or at the very least a partner they work with that will underwrite that policy. Combine that with the DD's and there's generally a discount involved. Good luck!

Hi Jeremy,
I understand that insurers are money makers. Just frustrated for my son that he was denied. He is less concerned than I am. He is working on his MBA and understands the business of business. Just think Hagarty missed a good customer. Their loss. I certainly won't insure my GT with them will I.

I hear ya Dave. Been there before myself many times... I'd suggest finding one that will cover him and a year down the road; revisit Hagerty if he still wants to. Again, there are so many to choose from, he'd be better off finding the one that fits him best. I know Grundy is REALLY aggressive right now. They have a pretty cool MVP program where they will insure everything, including your DD, boat, etc.. not just the collector.

One poster mentioned age. AFAIK Hagerty will not write a policy for anyone younger than 26. While they did write a policy for me, I cannot add my son as a driver until he turns 26. American Classic goes even further. They would not write a policy for me as my less than 26 year old was in the same household.
