This part of my post lost gauges,

Can't Identify this relay in front of the fire wall just before the fuse box,

looks exactly like the relay for the ignition on front of the fuse box..exactly the same model?

There is a Purple wire not connected? Must go somewhere?

Tks

Lori Ann

For a 79, you should have two; one is the starter relay and the other is the ignition relay.

In reply to # 2953481 by chris For a 79, you should have two; one is the starter relay and the other is the ignition relay.

The ignition relay is the one closest to the radiator. The starter relay closer to the fuse block. Both are located on the RH inner fender.

There will be some wires not connected under the bonnet, since most cars have had the Air pump and other emission equipment removed..

It shouldn't have anything to do with your gauge issue. Gauges are powered by the green wires.

Keep on target.. fix current issue, then come back an look at this if you want.. Purple powers courtsey lights, clock, horn.

Caution,
Purple wire is always LIVE, fused but live.

If it were to find an earth a fuse will pop!

Here is a link for easy to read MG wiring diagrams. Scroll down to the next to the last one, which is for your car.

As you can see the purple wires feed several different components. If you're curious enough, check all of those components to see if they work. If one of them doesn't, then that's what that wire hooks up to.

I'm not seeing a purple wire there; grey and grey/yellow that is folded and taped went to the anti-run on valve. There is a brown/purple. Is that what you mean?

DPO

Looking at schematic, most likely it's the door switch or seat belt that got disconnected.

Just conjecture.

Essentially it is covered. Something would have to stick up inside that plastic connector to touch anything hot. Not much risk to just leave it alone.

I have my wire harness opened. The only purple wires go through. There is a brown wire that is not connected to anything by that relay. Could it be that? It also is always hot so cover and continue.

As others have stated, check if anything on the purple loop is not working. If all is OK, then cap off and leave it to the MG wiring gods...
