“Ideological certainty easily degenerates into an insistence upon ignorance". Daniel Patrick Moynihan

In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.

Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

looking at NFL and NBA players today, they may have no problem with the first statement, but lots of them have problems with the second statement.

Murdering unarmed citizens seems to be a problem for some folks as well. As is the concept that selling loosies should not be a capital offense.

Stupid laws create stupid situations. Aparently Police have actually been called to businesses where folks stand around selling loosies....

I remember back in the day when bumming a cigarette was no big deal....

DFW area police have been non-discriminatory...they have been shooting and killed people of all races, in some instances unarmed people, some people who were not committing crimes, and some people who posed no threat to them or anyone else.

Couple of years ago, an 70 year old man heard a noise in his garage, grabbed his gun and went to investigate. Two officer investigating a burglary were at the wrong address, were poking around in the wrong driveway, saw the man in his own dark garage, yelled drop your weapon, then shot him dead. White guy. In his own garage.

Another man, mentally challenged, was sitting on a chair in his own drive way, wearing a bath robe, holding a butter knife. Police rolled up, the man stood up, slowly backed away from the officers, who then shot him from 40 feet away. White guy. The officers claimed in their reports that the victim charged them. They didn't know a neighbor was recording. Sad fact - after this incident, policy was changed giving officers three days to file shooting reports. In other words, let's see what video surfaces before we make officers write their reports.

Last year, police saw a car that had been reported stolen and tried to pull it over. Two black males were in the car. The driver slowed down, open the door, jumped out and ran. The guy in the passenger seat remained in the car with his hands up. The office ran up to the car with her weapon drawn, and shot him without warning or hesitation. The driver was caught, and admitted that his passenger didn't know he had jacked the car.

It appears to me that the Ferguson protests follow a false narrative, not based on the facts and reliable witness statements. But the NY choking death should give everyone pause. Committing a petty crime that would lead to a citation and fine should never justify escalation by the police to the point of using deadly force. Never. It's easy to say just stop committing crime, but this issue is wider than that. Around here, there is a lot of debate on "use of force" policies. That is a good thing. All of the police in the incidents I mentioned were fired, and one is being prosecuted.

"The 1,217 deadly police shootings from 2010 to 2012 captured in the federal data show that blacks, age 15 to 19, were killed at a rate of 31.17 per million, while just 1.47 per million white males in that age range died at the hands of police."

Instances of searches are similar. Most interesting is that searches of black suspects always turn out lower rates of contraband than white search subjects. Clearly this is due to the disproportionate searches and not actual disproportional rates of contraband, but interesting none the less.
