Started my wipers today just to be sure they still worked and they made a strange noise. I do not have a top for my car so it has never been in the rain in the 43 years I have owned it. However, the state inspection gestapo official will want to be sure I have good wipers. Took the motor and associated transmission out and found that the snap ring (that is what it looks like) that holds one of the motor shaft bushings in place, has come lose and is not properly holding the bushing in place. See picture below. Has anyone had a similar problem and, if so, how is this properly fixed?

Fixed it! (At least it seem to be working). Centered the snap ring then pressed it into position with a socket that was just slightly smaller than the ring itself. This was accomplished by holding the socket in place with a large "C" clamp. When it appeared the snap ring was as far into the recess as possible, I used a small punch to slightly bend the sides of the recess and hold the ring in place. I think that this was how the ring was originally held in place but it appears that the original installation did not properly bend the snap ring surround.

Thank god you have a Nazi officer in your neighbourhood, that makes sure you don´t hit the road (or me, on vacation in the US) with your car. MOT regulations are there for reason. You won´t get a permission in Europe without working wiper motors, they´re checked everytime.
Cheers,
Wolf

Looks like you got it sorted, but if anyone needs repair or rebuild, I've used this guy. Did a fantastic job rebuilding my wiper motor to better than new.
