You are supposed to come to a complete stop at stop sign's. Maybe the British are more law abiding!

If you want to go into 1st gear while moving you can always double clutch. I would do that from time to time on my BE when I was autocrossing.

But then you also have to be prepared to chip a tooth!

Costs. First and reverse share the same gear on the output shaft so gears are straight cut to allow sliding engagement. adding synchros would add much more cost.

With roundabouts and yield signs you rarely need to stop in England. They don't have many "Halt" signs. Last time I was there -2012- only one of my many relatives had an automatic. Even my 75 year old sister still drives stick.

Well, coming to a complete stop at stop signs a good habit to reinforce. And, leaving one synchro out helps keep the cost down.

Besides the cost being a key consideration during the design stage, mass was the other, and the rib-case transmission is one of the lightest and smallest 4 speed transmissions ever made. Whenever folks look into alternative ones for our cars the size and mass increase always causes trouble. It is fascinating that 44lbs for the transmission (including bell housing) is so VERY much lighter than anything else out there that has come along since!

I found it quite annoying that even while waiting for the green light with the tranny in neutral that I would need to wait for things to stop spinning before going into 1st or reverse. Then I found that if I went into 2nd and then 1st or reverse that the spinning stopped and I could go directly into 1st or reverse without waiting. I also found that even if I was close but not quite at a complete stop that I can go into 1st without grinding if I go to 2nd before going to 1st.

Cause they had no understanding of competition in those days and figured "good enough for the girls we sell to".
