The attached gearbox has been cluttering up my shop since the mid seventies. The casting number appears to be 19189 V. What car does this gearbox fit?

Peter,
Are you sure that it belongs to a TC. While I lived in Singapore I scavenged parts from several scrapped Mg Y's.
Regards,
Glenn

That appears to be a unique Rear Mount. I would suspect someone would recognize it from that alone.

I'm with Peter on this. It looks very much like the TC box I have in my TA. The rear mounts give it away.

Glenn, MG TB/TC gearbox for sure. Y and YT cars have the same looking gearbox as TD/TF where there is an extra casting extension on the rear. TC gearbox is very strong, if you were closer I would buy it from you.

The rear mount is certainly TC - the broken and repaired ear is what gives it away! The shifter, though, sitting next to the gearbox is definitely NO TC.

If it's something you wish to sell, please contact me off-line.

Attached is the engine block that the gearbox was attached. The engine tag is on the right hand side. I believe that the guy that I bought it from said it was off a YT.

The tag reads "XPAG SC" which stands for single carb, which is a Y-type.

Mike Sherrell on page 131 states in regards to the Y engine was to leave it for the Y's. He gives no reason for the statement? Is the block above a sutable for a T type car?

TC and early Y blocks have the same casting number 24146 and are banana shaped water holes, therefore perfectly suited to a TC. No idea why Sherrell says leave it to Ys??

Other than the visual difference, no problem using a Y block in a TC. The gearbox does appear to be TC. You should have no trouble selling it, as they aren't easy to find anymore. Much stronger than the later TD unit.

I recall many years ago I had a Y Type block in my TC "boy racer". The brass octagon was located nearer the top of the bell housing mating flange on the block rather than part way down from the top as on my current TC. I also have a spare TC block with the octagon in the lower position.

The rear mount is definitely for a TC but the shift tower is also definitely from a Riley RM. On the top left corner of the casing there should be a part number. Can you let us know what it is? Most of the gears in the Riley gearbox are not the same as those in a TC. For example the 1st motion shaft on the Riley is not the same length as the TC's and the Riley has a tooth count of 18 teeth whereas the TC has 20. Aside from the actual gears being different the rest of the gearbox is the same between the TC and Riley.
