I have a 1976 MG Midget today drove the car to work and I had some white dust all over the passanger side of the dash and windshield....... You guys have any idea?

Pretty common with our cars. You need a plastic battery box to completely isolate the battery from the thin sheet metal around it.

that white dust is corrosive acid, it will make everything made of metal that it touches rust (especially if it gets wet!)

you can try to minimize the damage to your car by mixing up a warm water/baking soda mixture and liberally pouring it over every surface which was contaminated


Also, it is important to ask why your battery was boiling over like that. A large amount of white powder is often an indication that the charging system is over-charging the battery.

When you have to replace your battery, you may want to consider an AGM type. There is less outgassing and corrosion with that type. I got tired of cleaning the white, crusty deposits off my posts and battery hold down so replaced the battery with one designed for the Miata. No more problems, and its smaller and easier to install.

Thanks for the advice I will do that tonight ... I only had the car for a month now... the car sat since 2003 the owner put 800 miles in 19 years the battery I took out was in good shape but it was not keeping a charge he stated that he always had it hooked up ...." not sure what he meant " but the battery was garbage ... the area after I clean it was in good shape at lest do.. but I will keep checking to make sure it don't return ..
