Which way up does the gear lever grommet go?

I've bought a lovely new gear lever rubber grommet (part # ACA5208) and can't decide which way up it should be fitted! The Moss catalogue says it will suffer rapid wear if fitted upside down, but that's not much help! My old one was fitted with the inner ring pointing upwards, whereas the picture in the Moss catalogue shows it pointing downwards. I presume the Moss catalogue is correct, and mine has been fitted wrongly all these years, and that's the reason why it's fallen apart.

I have seen pictures on the internet with it fitted both ways round.

Does anyone have a definitive answer to this one? I've tried the Search facility but couldn't get any useful results.

Many thanks

Tim

You did not mention what models you are referring to but the factory starting with the bugeye had the grommet fitted so the tall part of the rubber was down towards the transmission, most people install it the other way.

Thanks! I have a Mk1 Midget like yourself, and have now added it to my profile.

The gaiter seems to fit happily either way up, but it's definitely a tighter fit round the gear lever with the tall part pointing down, so that's the way I've fitted it.

With the grommet mounted upwards the lever hole has to move a much greater distance with every shift. That's why it deteriorates so quickly compared to one with the pointy end mounted down.
