Now that my Rover K series conversion is under way and my old 1.8 BMC engine is in my garage I'm wandering what I should do with it. Should I sell it? In which case how much could I get for it. It has the 4 speed + OD, carbs and both the water radiator and the oil cooler. It's in very good working condition un-restored. 127,000 miles on it or rounds about. Or should I keep the engine if I ever sell my car the engine can go with it. I don't plan on selling the car though. It's my one thing I want and it's my plaything. I also have a full exhaust. And I also have a twin-ended end bit. The carb air filters are the large K&N filters which are pretty expensive.

Future plans:

Rover K series conversion, in the shop.

"Unless you are poor and/or short on money", I would let your local British/MG car club members know that you have an MGB engine that is "rebuildable."

I'll see if I can contact them. I'm not part of any club. Should I sell it though if I do end up selling the car would it be better to keep the engine with the car.

Adam,

If you have to modify the frame and or the body, I doubt anyone in the near future would want to go thru all the effort to convert your V8 back to a 4 banger.

That being said, the answer would be to sell. Of course this is just an opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

David.

It's not going to be the Rover V8 but a 4 cylinder 1.8 VVC engine. How much should I ask for the engine though, is £700 too much.

Prices are different here in the US, but you can usually pick up an engine for about £100-200 or a few hundred dollars if you are patient. The OD's go for about $800 on average because they are so scarce. They were an option when new and not everyone purchased their new B with an OD.

Best bet is to get some advice from your fellow countrymen about the value.

David

I think I'm just going to keep it. I'm not short on cash and I might break it down and restore it myself. Put it into a kit car perhaps?

Actually, as I understand, it wasn't so much demand, but the fact that BMC/BLMC/BL in their infinite wisdom only shipped about 10% of the cars with OD option...

I'm in the same boat except I have no use for not only the engine but the front suspension including brakes and steering as well as the rear suspension (but I need the Salisbury and drums). One of these days I'll advertise on evilbay which is where I suggest you look at not only the prices being asked but also if they are selling - on the UK version. You'll note I didn't mention my gearbox. I already have my 3sync stored away and now I have a 4sync with OD to slip in there should I get tired of my c/r box.

So you're replicating the common Midget upgrade - have you been telling us about it over on the darkside.

Mk1: CKD 11/66 first registered 8/5/67; owned since 3/77. 18GB +40 balanced. Peter Burgess BVFR head. Piper 285. 123. FidanzaFW. 4synch c/r box. Lots more as I did a nut and bolt rebuild; finished 2015. Tartan Red.

GT: December '78. VW Golf guards, flush fit front and rear valances. Torana XU1 vents, frenched indicators & Mk1 rear lights. 'Worked' Rover V8 with Monsoon ECU for EFI. GM4L60E, Lokar tiptronic & Quick4 controller. Vintage Air A/C. FC IFS. CCE 4 link rear. Salisbury with Quaife. Jaguar Storm.
