I'm trying to identify a part on my Father's '72. It's inside the driver side fender, in front of the pedal box. It has a hard line that runs into the dashboard through the firewall. None of the diagrams I've seen show this, I'm sure it's simple, but I'm no where near an expert.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Mike,

It's the wiper motor and the hard line is connected to the wipers.

Thanks. Makes sense, in fact I'd gone through the diagram on Moss but it didn't click.

My only other option was that it was where there Lucas Smoke goes.

Thanks again.

Backbreaking work, literally, removing and cleaning the wiper wheel boxes. Well worth it if you want the original wipers to run at their factory specs--slow and slower!

Hell, I'm still trying to get the carbs running smoothly so I'm not worried about the wipers - although that might be an easy "win".

I nearly had it last week (meaning that I was able to drive the car out of the driveway and make it back without having to push it!) but I can't seem to capture the dark magic that is the SU carb. I think that I need to start over and center the jets, despite the "self centering" needles that that are installed.

Or it might just need new needles. But all of that is for a different thread.

Don't worry about centering the jets yet. Best thing I ever did--being frugal and inexperienced with SU--was balance the carbs equally.Take the idle screws and mixture screws down to their bearing surface and back up at the same rate, maybe 3 or 4 turns. Take your air cleaners off, get the engine to idle, then take a piece of hose to the opening of each carb and "balance with your ear" the sound you hear. Then, bring everything up to equal measure until the tach reads 800 to 1100 rpm. Presuming you can get the car to idle, this process took me a couple hours until the sweet note of the motor became symphonious.

By the way, off topic, your profile shows your car as a C type. May want to make sure you choose simply Midget.

Thanks for the info. After I uncovered the car and started working on it, I pulled the carbs off and cleaned everything up. The jets were glued in so I ended up replacing the jets and the jet bearings (car sat for 10+ years, but the carbs were new when it went into storage).

However I'm not getting the "clunk" that should occur when you raise and then drop the slides. I'm also having to run the jets much farther down than instructions indicate to get it to idle. I have the sync tool, so I've got the balanced, but the idle remains high.

So the short answer is that I need to start over and figure out what I missed. Currently I think that's ensuring that the slides drop cleanly, which is potentially the needles dragging in the jet. Could mean that the needles are bent, or that the jets are build to a different tolerance than the needles. I probably should have picked up new needles when I got the jets, but they looked ok. I have an old set of carbs sitting around so I might try swapping them out and see if that makes it better or worse. Then at least I'll know something.

The big hassle is having time to work on them, but we'll figure it out.

Mike, be sure you haven't accidentally "swapped" the piston chamber assy's. Before you do anything else try to see if the piston moves up and down freely. Your SU's were made for your year and if set up correctly cared for they will be your best bet to getting your car running well.
I'm hoping you discarded all the old gas in the system? Even if the car had 4-5 gallons of fuel do not try to run it. You need fresh fuel to get the motor running correctly.
Try to avoid a shotgun approach to getting the car on the road. Go system by system and do the simple things first.
There are plenty of helpful hints to "reawaken" as sleeping Midget in our library, I suggest you read on how to correctly get your car running.
