We determined that the engine was sitting just a little bit too high where there was no hood clearance, actually it was higher than the hood. So we decided to heat and beat the crossmember into submission to allow the engine to sit a bit lower. But, I think that the engine will still sit too high. Now I am wondering if there was a shorter intake manifold for the TBI. My engine is out of an S-10 where hood clearance is not an issue, so I'm wondering if the same system in a Camaro has a lower intake. Does anyone know anything about this, if not I'll have to do some investigating.
Once the engine was out, we took the car back home to my place where I can go about cleaning up the engine bay, anybody know how to get undercoating off the paint without ruining the paint?
My garage, devoid of cars for the first time since I got back into MGs, albeit for a short time.

Peter, we lowered it at far as it would go until the harmonic balance hit the crossmember, that's why we laid a beatin' on it, lol. Don't want to go too far, or we'll have to lay a beating on the firewall at the accelerator pedal some more. That's a last resort as I already have to alter the accelerator pedal.
Edward, yours is EFI, correct? That's slightly different than the TBI I have. I see how you notched the crossmember, we ARE trying to avoid having to do that, but we may not have any other choice. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the pictures (saved and stored).

i bought the car this way, due to not having the time to do one, and the builder said that it all came from an 89 camaro.
i'm not familiar enough with cars to know exactly what is right, or not, but it will fly.
it'll do better than 90 in 2 city blocks.
plenty enough for me. i was just looking for a lower rpm on the open road, and, boy, did i get that, and then some.

i'm gonna sell the 76, before i put it on the road, but play with it a little at the shop, while waiting it's turn.

Peter, thanks for the advice on the undercoating removal. I will try that.
Ya won't thank me when you show up at Ancaster looking like you picked tobaco for a month! It gets messy no mater how you do this.
A hardwood scraper will also work and you dont have to worry about it melting if you get it too close to the heat.

Yeah, Peter, don't think I'll be starting before Ancaster, got too many other things look after, besides, have to get a wood scraper. But, once the new week hits, look out, lol.
He will be too busy driving the roadster around to make sure his new windblocker is working correctly......lol

Ron,
TBI is supposed to be a bit tricky. I hope you are looking at this with the air filter off and considering a remote air filter too.
I have heard some take the Throttle body off and mill the manifold down.
Are you looking at the height of the system above the wings or are you actually laying the bonnet down? If you are not laying the bonnet down, it is not flat so it give more room.
Also, the cross brace will most likely need to be removed. This will not effect its performance or function.
Hope this helps,
-BMC.

You can find a 'hat' off a Caddy w/tbi that will work with after market air filters. It sits a bit lower than a cleaner. Tricks for flow can be found an the net. One was to cut the walls of the TBI that stick up above the mounting ledge for the air cleaner. This allows are to make a 90* into body instead of a 180 up and over them. Doesn't help clearance but does help flow.

There is no reason to beat the crossmember to clear the hood. The cross bar on the hood will have to be removed to clear the throttle body.
If you lower the engine to much, then the alignment between the engine and trans will be off. As per instructions the engine should have an angle of 3-4 degrees to the rear. If the engine is lowered, it will be difficult to achieved the correct angle.
If this is the way you want to install your engine, then you will have to shim the crossmember between the chassis and the crossmember to achieve the correct angle.
In my RD I just removed the corss bar on the hood, I also have a supercharger piping which is tall and everything fits under the hood.
It is our attitude that will determine the outcome

Brian, we laid the bonnet onto the car and had about 1/2 to 1" difference in height.
James, thanks for the heads up on the Caddy 'hat'. I'll have a look the next time I'm at the pick and pull.
Bill, does yours have TBI, or EFI? In my mind EFI gives more hood clearance than TBI, but I could be wrong.
It never dawned on us about the cross-brace, never though about it being in the way, will try that when the engine goes back in.
Thanks guys.
