A quick question,
Originally, does the wiring harness in the trunk go through the hole as in the photo (not mine) or just goes under it? It's a 1979
Thanks..

That doesn't look right.
See if you can find a flat metal 'tang' welded to the body at this position in the boot.
You should also find another of these 'tang' lower on the wheel well and a couple of these 'tang' at the rear of the boot tray. The harness 'tucks' behind the boot latch support crossing the boot.
Mine have a plastic insulating sleeve on them to secure the harness.

Bruce,
I have the metal tangs in my car (the photo in my post is not mine). I was just asking if the harness goes through the hole in the frame or not. Clearly from your second photo it doesn't. But in Paul'r 1979 it does. Perhaps it was rerouted in later years.

My 79 is routed like Bruce's, not through the hole.

I do not know everything so perhaps Paul is right. My car is a 1973.
If I was the methods/manufacturing engineer on this MGB assembly project I would not propose routing the harness as shown in your photo. Having an assembler run a wire harness through a potentially sharp edged opening seems fraught with potential failures.
I also think that long term the harness may chafe on that opening.
I was missing some of the insulating sleeves on these metal tangs on my car. I found that the double female bullet connector (we all have bad ones) sleeve fit the tang perfectly.
Your call

You need to remember that these cars were built by hand with limited documentation for final build. There are many inconsistencies within a single year as well as across model years. On person may install an item one way, and another may do it another way. A silly one that I got in a discussion about some years ago is which direction did the air filter horn on an air pump face when it cam from the factory, forwards, back or down??? Guess what there is no right answer. It seems to me from anecdotal observation that running the harness through the hole reduced strain on the wiring to the trunk light switch, and may and I emphasize MAY be the reason it was routed through the hole and back over the wheel well arch.

That's interesting, I came to the exact same idea after finding out I was missing one of those sleeves..
