I'm getting moderately close to putting my RB back together and I recall a problem I had getting the motor out. The steering shaft goes right through one of the motor mount brackets making it hard (impossible?) to tighten or loosen the motor mount. When I put the motor back in do I remove the steering shaft first? Does that mean dropping the steering rack? or can the shaft be removed another way?
Right now the steering rack is out and I pulled it with the shaft intact. I would like to re-install it before i put the motor in but I'm concerned about that motor mount

I had a friend with small hands reattach that mount when i put the motor back in after it was rebuilt. Never removed the steering rack from the car. would have been next to impossible for me to get my fingers in there to get the nut started. Took him quite a bit of time but with patience he got it done.

I bent and shortened a box wrench to fit up in there, put tape across the wrench on one side so the nut could be held in the wrench and fed it up and onto the motor mount stud. Couple minutes and I was done......

I hear you on that mount. Have to wonder what they were thinking.
I used to glue fasteners to the end of my fingers in order to get into these tight spaces. Now I use a small rare earth magnet inside of a rubber glove. Ditto on the bent and modified wrench; I have a drawer full of them.

Hit the search function here. We have discussed the pros and cons of all this many times before. personally I grease the plate up with a lock washer then grease the nut to my finger, have a good supply of nuts lying around(lol). Of course my hands were made for mgb dash repairs, anyone want to rent them?

That brings up another question...the manual is a little unclear about the motor mounts. Which way is correct? bolt toward the top or the bottom?
I like the grease idea but my hands are a little large. I DO however, have a teenager who would benefit from a little work experience

That's good, others seemed to scoff at the grease thing. Imagine not wanting to get greasy on a MG (lol). Teenager will give up ,might cost you too much in Energy drinks? I started this as a teen myself. The cat converters were roasting these new cars at an alarming pace! Now when I try to do it my hands cramp up too much.Must be car pa tunnel,
