In production now... What do you think?

Quote: "The MG6 is a sporting five seat fastback model, designed to capture the character of the MG brand and bring something different to the volume market. MG 6 is the first all new MG motor car since the launch of the MG F sports car.

Guy Jones, Sales and Marketing Director for MG Motor UK said, "This is a milestone day for the iconic MG brand and for the UK automotive industry. MG has begun the international launch of an all new model that has been designed and engineered here in the UK, for the global automotive market. Currently we only build and sell the mid-engined MG TF sports car here in the UK, but we can now look forward to expanding the range of MG products."

The launch took place at the 2009 Guangzhou Auto show in China and is the beginning of an exciting new global future for the MG brand. The launch in China, the world's largest automotive market begins the international roll out of sales of MG 6 which includes the UK. Sales in China will begin in January and plans for the UK and other markets will be released during 2010.

It was also announced that production of MG 6 for the China market will begin at the brand new state of the art factory in Lingang, China in December 2009. It is also planned to commence production of MG 6 at the Birmingham plant in the UK before the end of 2010.

The world famous MG brand has never had such a bright future as it starts to expand global sales with an exciting new range of products."

The Chinese ad is rather dramatic
Seems they are going for a Bond connection?

Word has it the British dealers picked up their demonstrators at the Longbridge plant today.
MG Motor UK will have demos at a big MGCC event this weekend.
I hope that the car is a success.

Good! As we all know, it's not a real MG unless it's built in Longbridge (a.k.a. MG Birmingham).

Then again, that may just be my personal bias....

I was skeptical about the MG6 until I saw it at the MG Stand at the NEC show. From a fit and finish perspective it was very well presented and I had a long converstaion with Ian Pogson who affirmed it's engineering quality.

Ian brings a lot engineering expertise from the Rover days and is a great supporter of the marque and the MG club scene and
is very enthusiatic about the future of MG

I too believe that a true MG should be conmpletely built in the Midlands but there are many who believe it's not an MG unless it was built in Abingdon.

If the car came to Canada I would one of the first to buy one! I just can't resist a new MG!

I was very skeptical about the Chinese connection at first but my attitude is softening.
Maybe because I now own a Birmingham MG, but also because I now see how multinational
the car industry has become. There are very few cars worldwide that are made exclusively
from components from their country of assembly. I find it encouraging that MG still does
a lot of their design work in the UK. We live in a world of Mexican Fiats, Turkish Fords
and Canadian Hondas. As long as they have a handle on quality control is a Chinese MG so bad?
Heck...they were building MG badged cars in Argentina 40 years ago!

Cheers,
Rich

The latest issue of MG Enthusiast has an article on the MG6.

I'm all for keeping the name alive but from the photos, my first thought on the interior was "bland". Maybe it was the use of straight lines rather than curves that make it look utilitarian.

JMHO.

On the other hand Simon the MG6 is in it's first model year in the UK.
If the feedback on the interior isn't good they will change it pretty darn quick!

Good point, Rich.

Too bad they didn't continue tradition and add a letter rather than a number to the model.

"G" doesn't work so well but I could get used to "MGH"... :)

Or the "ZV"::o
That wouldn't leave them with much alphabet room for more models though......
Or would it?.....ZV, ZW, ZX (can't use that one!), ZY, ZZ, then ZZA, ZZB, ZZC and on and on!

Coming in at under 25,000 CAD for the TF with style pack makes it a really nice price point. I'm getting excited!

It must be a real MG then, as it IS built and designed at MG Birmingham, aka Longbridge, but then were they not real MGs that were made in Abingdon, the home of MG and more latterly in Cowley??

By the way, we had an MG6 for 5 months while our TF was rebuilt following an accident (see photo) I found it a good drive with excellent handling and road holding...really would recommend it to anyone in the market for a 4/5 door 5 seater saloon/hatch.

I just returned from China and saw one of these over there. I about fell out of my seat when I saw it. Wish I had the camera on or I would have taken a picture. I sure wouldn't want to drive it over there. They don't seem to follow any traffic laws that I am familiar with. Then again when you consider that folks in China have only been able to own a car for about 7 years, it makes sense that it would be like driving with a world full of teenage drivers.

If you buy a new MG6 in the UK you get free VAT(20%off), sounds like a possible lame duck. Still not sure what to think of the car, when I go over next year I will drive one and then say what I think of them. SAIC is in the business of making cars and I don't think MG is their top drawer.

I can relate. Where I live the population is 60% Chinese, and they seem to have their own concept of driving.
Every day on the road is a new experience!

I had requested one from AVIS when we were in England back in July. Unfortunately we ended up with a Golf. We did see a few on the road, I thought they looked quite nice.

Plato finished 3rd in the British Touring Car Championship with the MG6.

Not bad for a car that had no testing done before the start of the season.

It looks like the MG6 has finally arrived in Australia. See MG6 in Australia.

Interesting use of "Morris Garages" on the dealership sign. There has always been some debate about the accuracy of this?

It will be interesting to see how they sell. Chinese cars are still greeted with some scepticism here, but so were Korean cars a couple of decades ago. I think they'll be much quicker in catching up with the mainsteam sellers though.
