Did he say "foly huck"?

Bob you can starting bragging when you get water closets installed in your homes. Nothing quite says you "have arrived" until you have one or two in the house...not out d'house

I'm sure the people who started this had good intentions...however now it's become more of a stunt that making people aware of ALS. Once the celebrities got involved and try to outdo one another...all was lost. Wanna help? Give money. TRUE charity is anonymous. Even a dollar donation does more than 100 people getting cold and wet...

The NEXT charity should be established to raise awareness about the injuries sustained by people patting themselves on the back and posting endless "humble-brags".

73 MGB. Tires: Round, black, hold air. Oil: Sometimes old, sometimes new...always slippery. Oil filter: Yellow, usually full of oil. Carbs: 2 SU HIF. Distributor: Yes. Headlights: Not that bright but bright enough. A bunch of other stuff most cars have but not really important enough to itemize. Oh, wait...it has a cool sounding exhaust with stickers on the chrome tips. Really slays the ladies...

Sorry to be so blunt and un-sympathetic......I totally agree. While some people thinks it brings awareness, most people actually focus on the act, not what it represents.

Uh, as in this video??? Aw, shucks, wait'l I tell Andy and Barney. They'll probably have to open another beer. That's the Oregon way. At least out here.

And Robt. - there is indeed indoor plumbing here, it simply costs twice as much to install as where you live. Our plumbers only work half a year, and either prepare for or go hunting the rest, so there's only so many hours in a year to make money. Just don't have a plumbing emergency during Elk Season. Or bow hunting season. Or deer season. Or bear season. Or tourist season.

By the way a large number of people taking the ice bucket challenge do so because someone they know challenged them to do so, and that if they did the challenger would donate $z. I suspect that even if the challenge is met, the challenger still donates to the charity.

I saw a national ALS association spokesperson on the national news tonight. Said that this is the best thing that has ever happened to them from a fundraising standpoint. No investment and contributions are running many multiples ahead of any previous year.

You may not like the method, but it appears to be effective.

In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.

Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

With the current federal budget fiasco, funding for any medical research is in the dumpster. If this manages to raise $$$ for the cause, then who am I to say that I am anything but jealous of the idea? (I make a living from medical research) Brilliant idea.

If people really care, they should make donations instead of acting the fool....

You realize, of course, that I've not yet "called out" my threesome. You *could* be next!

Most folks, I believe, participate in both the dumping and the donation.

It is recommended that one donate $10 if one "acts the fool" or $100 if one chooses not to do so.

I've lost a cousin and a neighbour (not to mention several patients over the years - one an MG enthusiast) to this debilitating, deadly disease.

I'm happy to do this challenge in their memory.

Cheers.

In reply to # 2774639 by HiPowerShooter TRUE charity is anonymous

I can't agree enough with that statement - but IMHO it strictly applies to GIVING MONEY only. Actually, anonymity is anathema to RAISING MONEY... whether it's climbing a mountain or sitting in a bath of baked beans, the "challenge" concept and (publicity thereof) has long been an effective way of getting people to reach into their pockets.

To some, the ice bucket challenge may be daft, gimmicky, egotistical, promoting peer pressure, or all of the above... but what does it really matter when the reality is - as Bob L states - that it has been phenomenal at raising both awareness and money for a good cause (just as the Facebook "make-up free selfie" campaign did for Cancer Research a few months back)? How much did you know about ALS before this challenge came along? Less than you know now since the press coverage of silly-but-fun ice bucket videos, I would wager.

Maybe we should all lighten up a bit... you don't have to participate or donate in the challenge if you don't want to, but to those who want to have a bit of fun and raise money and awareness for a good cause I say good for you and bloody well done. winking smiley

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. This disease has touched me through the loss of a cousin (Alan), a neighbor (Ralph), as well as several of my patients (Mark to name but one) over the past 37 years.

I was challenged yesterday by my friends Dane Lay and John Mangles (as a member of the British Motor Trade Association) to complete this challenge. I am happy to do so in memory of those lost and in the hope that the funds being raised by this challenge across the country can be used to find a cure.

I have many, many friends whom I would like to challenge…so I’m going to go with a “shotgun” approach. (Those of you with pacemakers are excused from the ice portion of this challenge.)

First, I challenge all 55 members of the Spurious V8 and MG Club International. Second I challenge the Executive Officers of the North American MGB Register (Alan Magnuson, Jeff Taylor, Bruce Wyckoff, and Dave Mullen). (I am sparing the Registrars and Coordinators as I know that the Executive will soon be including them in this challenge.) Third I challenge the Representatives of the North American Council of M.G. Registers (Tommm Metcalf, Hank Rippert, Bruce Woodson, Richard Liddick, and Tony Burgess). Individually, I challenge Jon Comden, Roy Zoldos, Tim Kesler, Dan Kesler, and John Preston. You have 24 hours to complete this challenge.

OK….here we go……and since our water is a little hard out here in the country, I’m taking some necessary safety precautions..I can seldom attach a video to my posts, so I had Jean take before and after shots as static proof of completion.

It may be egocentric to show off your donating, but that doesn't change the fact that money is going to a good cause.

A lot of people are also learning about it and sharing the knowledge gained.

What does it matter what the impetus for a person doing this is as long as the money is pledged to a useful purpose? I'm way too pragmatic about stuff like this.
