Do we have to use Smiths Tach when replacing? As you can see, the wires in my loop are fried.

I have one I will sell to you. I can pull the tach out tomorrow and get you some pictures. I have more than one so if your interested, let me know the model numbers on the face of yours and I will check to make sure I have the right one.

It likely wasn't the tach's fault that your main ignition wire is fried. I'd do some careful electrical examination before even considering turning the key on that car, given the function of the white wire.

On the topic of tachs, I retrofitted the guts of a modern tach into the original case and used the original face and needle after some careful modification.

Any chance the tach is still good? It worked 4 years ago when I first bought the car off of my friend, the car was converted to Neg. Ground so I assume the tach was converted too, since it worked. However, when I opened it up, it doesn't look like it was converted, but it definitely doesn't have the "little green wire" to switch with the transistor, pics included
So, if it was not converted, how the heck did it work?

Converting a tach of that vintage simply means reversing the direction of the white wire loop.
