I've checked the fuses in the box, wires at the coil, is there an in-line fuse?

It's powered by the green circuit. If that fuse is blown, you'd also have no turn signals, temp and fuel gauges.
It's triggered by a white with black connector at the coil. Check to see if it hasn't been knocked off. Does the light in the gauge come on with your headlamps? Might be a bad ground.

Thanks.....the dash light for the tach works. I've checked the wires at the coil and made sure they are connected

dash light for tach has zilch to do with signal.

Check continuity for the white/black wire from tach to coil (i.e. check ohms. Should be zero or near).

Reassembling my car after painting I found I'd "lost" the tach end of the white/black wire so ran a new one (white wire with Sharpy black line drawn on it, on both sides<G>winking smiley works fine.

OK....
I was able to contort myself and get behind there and check things out. all connections are good. I pulled the tach out and made sure the ground was clean etc.
Cleaned and made sure good contact at the coil.
Still no tach :-(

Am wondering if anyone has ever made a two-mirror periscope to look up behind the dash?

Is it possible that your car is actually a 72 ?

If so then for that year the entire ignition circuit went through a loop in the rev counter and they have a propensity for burning out.

The serial number on the face will reveal all.

The wriing seems OK. If the dial light works, I would say that the tach is toast. The RVC, which you have, use a custom, unobtainium, chip inside, so I would suspect this chip or the meter movement to have died.
