Anyone have a TF with Ford Seira 5 speed gearbox and if so how and where did you get the speedo calibrated?

The Company recommended by the supplier of 5 speed kits based on the Ford Type 9 gearbox, recommends Speedograph Richfield in the UK. The methodology to give them the required information is on their website. However, I hsve no doubt that you can find someone in the USA who can also do this. They will require the same information.

Will have to do the same thing myself soon as I am finishing my rebuild. Progress is slow as its so darn cold here at the moment. I'm working in a small double garage that is full of all sorts of junk and no heating. However, expect to buy a new set of wheels and tyres in a couple of months, then I'll be ready to push it down the drive and get the speedo recalibrated.
Its a small world, my son is working out of Houston. Much warmer there (most of the time). Dave H

Hi Rodger,
This past spring I put a 5 speed Sierra T-9 in our MGTF 1500 and the difference in the driving and handling has been wonderful. I highly recommend it.
I took the speedometer to Palo Alto Speedometer (they're local to me) and I got the speedo and odometer calibrated for around $300.
Took them about three weeks to do the work and I am very pleased with the results.

Roger, Declan Burns makes and sells a correction box that just fits to the back of the Speedo. It all fits by undoing the speedo cable and fitting the box to the back of the speedo and re-attaching the cable to the correction box. Much better quality than Speedograph Richfields unit and a fair price. Declan test all his units for functionality. Declan frequents the MG Enthusiast site.

Roger - You can also get a ratio box in place of recalibrating the speedometer. Contact Butch Taras at mgyowner@yahoo.com Butch can make a ratio box for you.

I'm sure those people know what they are doing. Use the tach until the speedo is re-calibrated. If the speedo broke on my TC, I would be fine watching the tach--right in front of me, until I could find time to fix the chronometric speedo. Some people never watch the speedo on these LBC's.

What year Ciera's work for a TF? 1250 or 1500? Work on TD? Canadian and US Ciera transmissions?

The key point is that its a Ford Type 9 5-speed box. It was used in several Ford UK models including the Sierra. There are some websites that will give you detailed information. One specific version (widely used over here) is used for the Hi Gear conversion kit. However if you find any Type 9 and are going to have it overhauled before use (which seems wise), you can change out the input shaft - they differ in length, number of splines, etc., and it will be fine. Even the relatively uncommon Ford Transit version with a side mounted shift can be used if you also find a saloon type gear selector.
