For those of you who have installed a T5/V6 in their MGB did you put the engine and transmission in with the shifter already installed, or did you mount the engine/transmission and then cut a hole in the floor big enough to install the shifter through. I cant seem to get the tail of the transmission over the MGB cross brace if the shifter is on the transmission.

I think you've answered your own question - shifter can be installed from underneath the car before the xsmn is bolted down - access for tightening the bolts is from under the car or through the shift opening if sized right.
I've always installed and tightened the shifter from the bottom and it's not a big deal!

In my excitement I failed to notice their is a plate on the floorboard that when removed makes the opening mutch larger, allowing me to install the shifter then lift the transmission into place. Now I just have to modify it a bit to line up centered in the hole. Its coming along nicely.

Yeah, when I've had to take the transmission out, I always take out the shifter first from above, then stuff a rag into the cavity in the trans. I made a new plate that put the shifter hole farther forward, it makes for a pretty clean installation with the stock shift boot and chrome trim ring.

Jake - looks like you used an upright mount version of the T5. I wonder if the Camaro version, which mounts at an angle wouldn't have put the shifter right in your 'window' of the stock hole, and you wouldn't have needed to step over the shift lever?
