Hi. I want to describe this and see if anyone can suggest what the fault is.

For months, the solenoid clicks and starter motor spins on ignition key turn but usually won't engage the ring gear until a few key turns, or doing the 4th gear rock back thing.

This AM I turned the key, and the car gave a sort of ,,heave,, combined with loud mechanical grunt. It has done that before but this time, for the first time, the starter no longer spins when the ig.key is turned and solenoid clicks.

Q. Any thought that it might just have blown a fuse? (I.e. Starter motor may have jammed while receiving current and thus overloaded the circuit)

I am about to go out with meter, armed with Haynes and too much coffee, and jack up the front end. Hmmm! But i bet someone here can tell me what i am dealing with. Cheers! Dave

The origional starter has a button on the back that starts the car. Good to try.

Common failure is the starter jammed on the flywheel. With the lights on hit the starter. If the headlights sort of go off it might be a stuck starter or a dead battery.

Common is dirty battery terminals. Battery does not charge. Not enough juice to turn the engine over.

First thing I would do is do the battery service. Check levels. Clean terminals with the special tool. Charge the battery overnight. Try starting.

Easy stuff to fix but, which one.

Jumping it will not work with a stuck starter.

Thanks! You nailed it, focusing on the battery. With a jump from a good battery with good clean jumper cables we got it turned over and back in business. My little battery is 9 years old so it's done it's time and I'll replace it. Appreciate your help!! Dave

Dave.

When you do, use the tool to clean connectors well. Also the ground.

Carefully inspect the connectors. The copper wire under the clamp turns green indicating corrosion. They can actually break off it gets so bad.
