There seems to be a strange higher pitch sound emanating from the engine. I can't figure out what it could be, perhaps the water pump? Listen to the sound file.

Hard to tell from the recording, but try removing the fan belt to see if the noise goes away...

There's a trick mechanics use when trying to track down noise. If you put one end of a rod on a part and the other end against your head near your ear you'll hear the sound coming from the part a lot louder than the other sounds. This can help isolate the source.
Obviously you need to be careful about doing this. It only works on static objects, not belts and pulleys. I have a 24" long screwdriver I use.

I would suspect slipping fan belt, alternator bearings or water pump.

It sounds lower pitch than what I've heard from the belts, but removing the belt as Dick suggests is right on. It sounds like it could be an alternator bearing, and of course removing the belt will stop that noise!

Sound recordings of engine noises are really tough to identify!

The Alt is new about a year or so old. If i remove the belt and the Alt will not spin, then how can i verify if it's the Alt?

If the sound goes away when you remove the belt, spin both the alternator and the water pump by hand. If one or the other is bad you should feel looseness or roughness. Couldn't tell from the audio clip, but you could also have belt squeal...

All good ideas. To me it sounds like the fan hitting the fan shroud. Is that possible? I sure hope that's not a bad lifter! Basil 707.762.0974 basiladams@yahoo.com

Basil - i have a new electric fan that comes on only when temp reaches above 180F. So it's not the fan.

Water Pump, Alternator, Belt squeal or tiny exhaust leak.
Remember what it sounds like when you let air out of a balloon slowly by pinching the sides of the neck of the balloon and pulling apart? When you start to get an exhaust leak it can whistle out the crack and drive you crazy looking for the source.

To me, it sounds like a very dry bearing in the alternator. If it is the alternator, it sounds bad enough that it should be obvious when you remove the belt and spin it by hand.

Is your smog pump still on the car and connected by a belt?
