I want to pull the front suspension and steering off and wasn't quite sure what my Haynes manual was trying to explain. something about inserting bolts somewhere to get the springs out. I would just start removing stuff but a spring under tension could ruin my day.
Can someone please dumb it down for me?

There are four bolts securing the spring pan.
Remove two of those bolts (diagonally opposed).
Replace them with two fully threaded bolts about 3" long. Snug them up.
Remove the other two original bolts (short).
Evenly loosen the two long bolts you installed. This will gradually reduce the pressure on the spring.

Reverse procedure above to reinstall your springs.
