Problem is, it's mine. Had my 21 speed bike secured to a larger tree. Used a 3/8" stainless steel wire rope with combination lock. Wove the rope thru wheels and frame with the lock situated so that there was nothing to rest it on.
Got home yesterday and no bike and no sign of the steel rope. So at least I should be grateful they cleaned up behind themselves.

..if it's a 21 speed bike he may not be so near anymore...but best of luck to anywayz...
....try placing an add for needing parts to your kind of bike...he may see quick buck time, but say you are in another area...then catch him and cook him in peanut oil....for Thanksgiving, kinda like a Norman Rockwell painting....

You can cut 3/8" stainless cable with a reasonably sharp hatchet.
I'm sorry to hear of your loss and hope you can track it down. Wyatt's idea above might just work.

Yep, but no cut marks on tree trunk, cutting against the bike frame would damage that, and the actual lock was in mid-air not close enough to rest it against anything solid. Not sayin impossible, just darn difficult.

Sorry for your loss, Simon. If some low down dirty scoundrel ever steels one of my bikes I'll lynch him from the nearest oak tree, after I shoot off both knee caps and and beak both elbows and stuff a glass rod up his penis and break it.
You are live in an area where there are tons of people who ride bikes, That equates to a big market in used bikes and parts (i.e.: stolen). They may have seen your bike and lifted it just for the parts, which may show up on Craigslist/Ebay. If you have a pic of the bike, let your local bike shops know about what happened and they can keep an eye out for it. Reputable bike shops hate bike thieves just as much as the rest of us.
I hope you have success in getting it back. My recommendation would be to get a "U-lock", something like Kryptonite, which your LBS would carry.

If I left my bike outside it'd more likely get picked up in the next kerbside collection.
