I recently did some research on here looking for ways to fix issues I had with the 79B that had been converted to twin SUs. The person who did the conversion just used a twin SU cable, which left a couple of issues - mainly sticking on hi revs (the outer section moves and jams in the entry hole in the firewall).
On here several people, on here, had posted some "hi tech" solutions which I did not have the equipment to duplicate. Then, while digging in my toolbox, I came across the cable for the single carb (yes I'd ordered the wrong one and never returned it) and inspiration struck. I took the outer from the old cable and reversed it so the the adjusting nut was at the firewall end. Fed the inner from the new twin carb cable into and connected everything up. A little tweaking of the adjustment nuts and I now have a nicely working throttle, that drops back to idle when you lift AND actually idles closer to where it should, instead of the higher 1500rpm it used to insist on.
Cheap, simple and looks like it belongs.
This solution may have been posted before, but if it has I did not find it in my searches.

what does it idle at now? Late 18v should be around 850 or so.

Get one of these. It is a LOKAR universal cable and it a huge improvement over the MGB bike cable device. The ball-jointed attachment to the throttle lever is a quantum leap ahead of the dog's breakfast that the MG designers foisted upon us.
