Great article on our own Jeff Schlemmer's Bonneville Datsun pickup in the May 2017 issue of Classic Motorsports.
Way to go, Jeff!

We're packing up today and heading West tomorrow morning. Its running strong, although as always with new builds, a few bugs to work out. That's half the fun.
The pic isn't current - we're actually running a MUCH higher compression motor with dual 50mm Weber DCOEs. If we can get through tech inspection (brutal from what I hear) and make a few runs, this year will be a success. Racing starts Saturday! There will likely be some updates posted here: Speed Week website
You can watch some live streaming racing starting on the 13th here: http://www.scta-bni.org/live-streaming.html

Good luck Jeff, is there any online link we can look at during the event to see the timed runs?

I've overnighted in Wendover twice. Great little town in two states! And you gotta appreciate the history of Wendover AFB.

Hey Jeff.....a few quick thoughts from when I ran there in what seems like a 100 years ago: Get a couple large blue tarps from Harbor Freight ( not the silver ones, remember the sun) to serve as the floor of your pit area. Don't wear baggy shorts or you'll fry the family jewels after a week on the salt. The sun is intense and reflects off the salt and up your pant legs. Don't use water to spray the salt off your wheel wells. The resulting salt solution will be worse than a Minnesota winter.
Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
"Anyone with an intense emotional interest in a subject loses the ability to observe it objectively: You selectively perceive events. You ignore data and facts that disagree with your main philosophy. Even your memory works to fool you, as you selectively retain what you believe in, and subtly mask any memories that might conflict."

I had my 300ZX on the salt in 2011.....didn't run the flats, though, as the salt was too wet. I had been advised at the visitors' center that serveral tow trucks had alrady been called out that day to retrieve stuck vehicles.

I'll try to post updates, but what I remember from last year is that internet service anywhere near Wendover sucks at its best, then gets worse with more people using it.
The link above will get you some live coverage, and the base SCTA site will likely have some daily postings, as time allows. Usually they only post the new records, so that will start Sunday after they back-up record runs?
It looks like they got some rain last night, so it'll be interesting to hear the salt report today. As mediocre as the truck is currently running, it'll take a while to sort it out. Since I popped a tire last night, I can't make any more test runs. Hoping to get another tire delivered to the Hotel Friday. Just waiting for the West coast to get to work so I can place an order.

I don't know if anyone cares, but I thought I'd post the outcome of our trip to Bonneville. Sorry its a bit off topic.
We arrived Friday afternoon, and made it to inspections Saturday mid-day - plenty of unloading, setting up camp, and working in the mean time - waiting for the lines to shrink a little.
We actually passed tech with NOTHING to repair! Rumor had it this is unheard of. I guess it pays to cross your T's and dot your i's? The driver passed his bailout test with flying colors.
From there we attended rookie orientation on Sunday morning, then got our first run in Sunday afternoon. A very disappointing 99 mph. Fuel mixture was WAY off from the altitude change.
We made jetting changes all week trying to dial-in to the temp, humidity, and ever-changing speed density. Traction was not good, but the truck tracked straight and true, with a few bolts rattling loose along the way. Minor maintenance, considering how rough the pit road was (5 mile tow each way). At one point, I welded a set of broken Miata upper control arms back together for our pit neighbors due to the bad road. Yes it was THAT bad!!! The course was better, but not much.
Later in the week we got a second driver through tech and his rookie run. Our last runs of the week, bot drivers were within .1 mph of each other on both the 2 mile rookie course and the 3 mile short course. Our top speeds ended up at 110.666 and 110.7 mph, 107.7 and 107.8 on the rookie course. Not what we dreamed of, but the tachometer said we were going 151 mph while the GPS said 111 - with a 7/8" stack of steel plate lining the truck bed for traction. We are already working on a gear change and a plan for better traction for next year, striving for the long-held record of 129.6 mph. If nothing else, we had a great time and have an even greater respect for those who know how to make traction on salt! I'd also like to thank the entire team and our sponsors for all the support and help along the way!!!
