I got my con rods back from the machinist today. He had no trouble pressing the AE original bushings into the rods. However, when I was assembling the rods and pistons, I noticed one bushing was pressed in upside down, ****! Some may say, "Oh, its OK". I say, no way! I am bringing it back tomorrow to be put in correctly.

One question: Can a bushing be pressed out and pressed back in and still be secure???

It might press in and out ok (I would never do it myself) but it definitely won't be round anymore.

Yes. The machinist will know if the bushing interference to rod re-fit is correct. Take a wrist pin with you to check for proper fit which should be palm pressure. Once the wrist pin is in the small end you should be able to rotate it with firm hand twist.

Be safe out there.
Kenny

The press fit question is only part of the problem. The eye of a con rod is rarely round, from new and from use. The bushing ID distorts when it's installed, that's why it is undersized out of the box. It is then honed or bored to correct the OOR and to obtain .0003" -.0005" clearance. If it is removed and re-installed you will get different distortion and you will not be able to get the correct clearance back. You need a new bushing if you want it to be correct. Pressing the bush in wrong is not that hard to do, I've done it myself. I admit to having pressed them back out and reinstalling them with success but that was before final honing. You can't do it after it's been sized.

I am pissed! This was a careless mistake that has cost me more time and money. I have to take a chance and see if it can be corrected.

It seems like every week, there is a new story about a machinist screwing up something simple on someone's MG. This is what I was talking about on another thread, where I believe there is a market for mail-order machined parts from someone like Dale.....I wish he would reconsider his rejection of my idea winking smiley

I hear that! Almost like there is no sense of precision in what is supposed to be a precision trade. I just wish Dale or Hap would move to SoCal. We seem to be at the mercy of our local hacks.

Update: Not so upset now. Went to the machinist, he was very contrite. He said he simply screwed up. Hey, most of us are just human. He also said that reusing that bushing would not work. Wow! he did not just try to pass it off as 'ok'. He may end up being a keeper. He said he would pay for the new bushing and the repair and try to find one through his supplier. I made him aware of the XRN made bushing that are now being sold.

And, as luck would have it, I searched and found another NOS set of AE bushings. Unfortunately, they won't be here until the 7th. Will I ever get this engine done? Oh hell yeshot smiley
