I took a ride last night at a temperature of about 75 degrees. The temperature gauge was reading on the low side. Gauge is working correctly as it will show an increase as soon as you come to an idle. All fans are working correctly as they come on at the correct temp. I prefer to run a little warmer. Any thought with out partially blocking the radiator?

Maybe it is the time to change the thermostat, yours is probably always open or you have a sleeve in place. In principle the temperature outside should not influence that much the internal temperature of coolant.

Fuel is the best coolant in your engine. You may simply be running rich? How's your mileage? The target for an MGB is 24-30 mpg, depending on if you run a Stromberg, DGV, or SUs.

Thermostat. Dont use a failsafe. Too many bad threads on them.

It's not so much the cool that is an issue it is that the temp is not stable at stop & go vs. open road.

What rated t'stat are you using. The t'stat sets the MINIMUM normal operating temp. That said, even with the t'stat closed you get some coolant flow thru the bypass.

It may be that a shop or PO installed a 160 or 180 t'stat, that's low for a 79. Check your temp with a infrared thermometer and maybe move to a higher rated one.
