Rover V8 plenum chamber water jacket

How essential is this below and what is its function?

I have one but we are probably going to "modify" the stock plenum chamber (or make a bespoke) and my TB will be located somewhere in the intake pipe. I remember advice that I didn't necessarily require a flame trap given my rocker covers only have a hole for oil pouring so I was wondering.



Mk1: CKD 11/66 first registered 8/5/67; owned since 3/77. 18GB +40 balanced. Peter Burgess BVFR head. Piper 285. 123. FidanzaFW. 4synch c/r box. Lots more as I did a nut and bolt rebuild; finished 2015. Tartan Red.

GT: December '78. VW Golf guards, flush fit front and rear valances. Torana XU1 vents, frenched indicators & Mk1 rear lights. 'Worked' Rover V8 with Monsoon ECU for EFI. GM4L60E, Lokar tiptronic & Quick4 controller. Vintage Air A/C. FC IFS. CCE 4 link rear. Salisbury with Quaife. Jaguar Storm.

No need unless you get a massive drop in ambient temps!
It is to prevent ice up on the throttle plate.

Just be aware that the mounting holes are not all blind, so you need some loctited in Allen head studs to plug them. If not you will have a great vacuum leak.

Have never run one & have never Iced up. With lowering the plenum the cover will hit the top of valve cover. There are 2 hole, that go through the cover that will let air into the plenum that need to plugged or you will get a 2500 rpm idle. I used a 1/4 course Allen plug.

Ok thanks for the advice to plug the holes if I use the "stock" plenum.
