Hi Guys and poss girls,

New to MG's had a number of classics over the years but believe it or not never an MG. Anyway recently bought a 78 Midget and really enjoy driving it, gradually going to do some work over winter. Noticed the steering has some play so thought I would strip front suspension and do a basic rebuild. King pin has play in bottom trunion so thought would renew king pins, have got so far but can not get stub axle off king pin, do I need to remove brake disc / hub first or are the stubs pressed on ?
Thanks for any help you can supply.

If there is play at the bottom of the king pin it is most likely the Wishbone / Spring Pan is worn out.

The king pin locks itself to the lower fulcrum pin, the fulcrum intern rotates inside the wishbone threads. That is the ware point.

You will want to get replacement wishbones and other major parts. If you have the room its best to take one side apart first, worst side. The figure out what parts to get. You will want to get new wishbones that come with the fulcrum installed in them. As you are assured the threads line up. I went with the aftermarket on these.

The bushings inside the Swivel Axel need to be reamed to fit with a special tools that is NLA. So if you need new bushing then its best to send them out to be reamed and fitted.

I also used the $3.00 rule here and if the part was less than $3.00 I went ahead and got at least one.

If you need to do breaks do them as the same time as well, because you will need to take it apart to get the disc replaced anyway.

This is the most expensive part I did on my car, as the body and engine was already in good shape.

Also the rubber bushings you get today suck, go with poly.

BTW the special tool was REALLY REALLY expensive, which is why most couldnt justify the expense and so they went out of production (only in the last 14 years or so did the stocks at moss run out).

I just posted the how to get your suspension apart link this am. One if the other threads on here has the step by step with pics that you need. Peter Caldwell provides a service to ream kingpins to fit. Turnaround typically in a day or two for a very reasonable price in my experience. He also will provide his fabulous shocks which you will likely need as well to do it right.
