How do you remove the rocker pedestal? I'm trying to replace a broken rocker. Is it pressed on?

Before I screw anything up, like I usually do, I thought I'd ask

Not sure what you're asking. The rocker pedastal will be free of the head when you remove the two bolts and it just slides on the rocker shaft.

I'm thinking your trying to remove the rocker shaft without loosenIng the head bolts. Never tried it. It may be possible but if I remember there is one headbolt that would have to be removed, the positioning plate is held in place with it. You would have to loosen all valve adjustments and slide the shaft forward. I hope someone has a better idea.

I'm trying to remove the pedestal from the shaft. I broke 3 rockers in the last 3 races. I was going to take 1 set of rockers to fix the other 2 sets.

Speaking from memory. On the MGA and early MGB, there is a set screw in one of the rockers. I think it might be the one with the oil feed. In the MGB Moss catalogue on page 10, it would be part 92. It sets the rocker shaft to the pedestal. There is also a thin nut on each end of the rocker shaft. If you remove those nuts and that set screw, the whole assembly comes apart. Your set screw may require an Alan wrench rather than a screwdriver.

On the A series the set screw sticks up from the pedestal and has two flats on it. It is held from turning with the top plate.

By the way, only one, maybe two pedestals had the oil hole in the bottom and had to be installed in the correct position or you won't get oil on the shaft and rockers. You can use all with holes as replacement but not he other way round.

Darryl, if you are working with a old set of rocker arm cores, that has set up for awhile, it is not uncommon for the pedestals to stick/seize to the shaft, just tap them off with a dead blow hammer.

Got them fixed. I pressed them out but it didn't very much presser. The second one I took the clip, they just popped right off. I got one ready to go back into the parts bin in the trailer.

Thanks everybody

I was cleaning up an old head today, I guess that one that needs the oil hole is the first one.
