I'm looking to fill in the void or opening in my dash with some sort of entertainment device. I have shopped around and in a number of places I find a radio where they are telling me it fits a 1967 MGB, but when comparing specs (2.18 x 7.18 opening) it doesn't come close to fitting. Any recommendations on sources or brands for a radio and are there additional items required (other than power harness) required to mount the device. I'd also be interested in procuring an original am/fm radio for my ride. Nothing too pricey please!

That opening conforms to the standard DIN size. Any radio to DIN standard will fit.

The US standard for a DIN radio is 7" x 2" (although the actual 180 mm width converts to something like 7-3/32" so most people use 7-1/8" to allow for clearance) and the Double DIN sized radio is a 7" x 4". Some radios in Japanese Kei cars do not conform to the DIN standard however.

There are any number of cheap radios that will fit. For a retro look one you will need to pay big bucks.

Most aftermarket radios now are considered "Media Players" and DO NOT play CD's.

All have AM/FM.
All have an AUX in.
Most sync to your phone via bluetooth for music playback.
Most have a USB input to play MP3 files.
Most have an SD card slot also to store and play MP3 files.
And many feature hands free calling.
And there many out there for less then $100. smiling bouncing smiley

While Media Player radios are Standard single DIN size, they are generally 1/2 the depth of a radio w/CD making it easier to install in tight places.

Check out www.crutchfield.com. They have a tool thay will tell you which radio will fit in your car. (Yes, their database DOES include MGB's) Their web site has lots of good info and their prices are competitive.

I have used Rertosound radios in the past and they work great and look right in older cars. They are cheaper on Ebay and are offered with a selection of face plates and knobs. Simply put "rertosound mgb" in the search box.

You can also find vintage radios on ebay that will fit. For example a some vintage Blaupunkt radios (Frankfurt, Mannheim) come with a DIN socket in the back that allows you to use a modern mp3 player.

Also if looking at vintage radios you will need one that is good for positive (+) ground if you have not converted to negative (-) ground

I just picked up a Pioneer unit with Bluetooth and speakerphone from Crutchfield recently. Install was easy and it sounds great. Only cost $90 shipped.

Along the same idea, but different. What are people using for speakers without cutting door panels or ugly boxes sitting in back of a GT? I have several radios that will fit my 74 GT, but I just put new door panels on it where the PO had hacked holes in the old ones. Most radio/CD/media players have 4 channels FR,FL, RR, RL. I really don't want to cut up the interior of the GT to mount Ghetto Blaster speakers. I need ideas and help. Thanks, John

Hi John,

This may not help you much, but I fitted early Miata seats, because the Missus complained about the lack of headrests, and they came with two speakers in each headrest. How I have set it up is that the front two speeker output drive the speakers in the driver's headrest, whilst the rear output drive the passenger ones. This allows for maximun hearing comfort for both the driver and passenger.

Thank you Herb. I have thought about MX-5 seats as well. The problem is she is a 71,000 mile original with good MGBGT cloth seats. If they were both tatty I'd change them out in a heart beat for the Miata seats. My classic Mini has Nissan 280zx seats in it. Power adjust with lumbar support as well. Worked great for a 4500 mile road trip from Orlando Florida to Sturgis South Dakota. I have 2 sets of Miata seats to fit into a friends Spitfire w/speakers.

Hi John

I had the same problem mounting speakers in my 77 G. When I bought the car, the door panels were intact and a couple of old speaker pods were siting loose on the back seats. I bought a pair of small, slim podded speakers and mounted them behind the seats, against the side panels but suspended from the window trim, no vinyl was harmed in the mounting. I'll attach a photo if I can? They are a bit tinny so I intend putting a base speaker under the passenger seat sometime.

I put a dual cone speaker in my 67 GT up front and two older pioneer ts-66 speakers in a plastic wedge in the rear cutout compartments. I am using a Panasonic radio. Nice radios from the 90's are going for nothing at flea markets. They kids are updating to the new ones with blue tooth and screens.
