Maybe try fitting a relay between the switch and the fans. Remember that the fans take many amps.

20 some years ago I saw what trash was being supplied for the rad. fan switch & I bought every 80 switch I could find. Fans come on at 200 deg. & off at 195, just what you need for the rover alu. engine. Holds up real good without a relay, BUT I do put one in to help the switch out.

Why not install a quality adjustable relay controlled aftermarket switch.
You can get dual fan controls from speedway, summit, jegs etc.

There are two different switches for the fans, one for just the 1980 Model year and one for the earlier cars (77-79). Like Glen, I found the earlier ones to be of substandard quality and changed to the later switch.
The negatives are: you will have to modify the harness as the switch for the 1980 has spade connectors as opposed to the pin connectors on the earlier models, and the 1980 one is about 3 times the price. You will need to buy the bush and clip as well.

I had to replace the thermostatic switch in my 80 LE as part of its rolling restoration.
I found somewhere on line that the switch was rated for 10 amps and that the fans, after warming up, will draw 11 amps.
Not the recipe for long switch life.
X 3 on installing a relay!!

I found an article in the technical section of this data base (electrical and instruments ).
http://www.mgexp.com/article/77-80-cooling-improvements.html
which has a picture of the 1980 thermostatic switch, grommet and retaining clip.
