The pulley on the new alternator I'm installing is about 1/8" - 1/4" too far forward. The other two pulleys line up with each other like they should.

Will this be a problem? If so, should I grind the front alternator ear so the pulley will line up or should I grind the water pump bracket? Or should I just leave it like it is?

Jim

You need to correct it or replace belts.. Grind the water pump front flange. The rear bushing on the alternator can be pushed in a little more to adjust the gap or move the extended rear bracket back.
Interesting that you have a Lucas Elektrik alternator seems they sell Lucas type alternators which may be a little different.

Thanks Gary. This is the alternator Moss provides in the alternator conversation kit they sell.

I believe the water pump mounting point varies in thickness depending on the type of pump used, MGA, MGB or the Aluminium aftermarket examples. But if that's the pump your going to use then yes grind down that point so the pulleys align and the back mount lines up.

It appears to me that the alternator pulley is sitting to far forward. Before grinding things, check to see if there is a spacer behind the pulley.

Had one like this not long ago. Pulley is the issue - 10 minutes in the lathe and all lined up nicely.

Even if you fix the pulley the back bracket of the alternator will need to be shimmed to close the gap.
