Hi guys,
I haven't started my car very often over the last 3-4 months. But it was running smooth, now its popping out the exhaust.
Popping seems like maybe it would be lean, but I get a heavy gas and exhaust smell when the car is running as if it was rich.
I also noticed that from the Y fitting on the carbs to the can on the front timing cover. That a decent amount of oil is coming up (I have clear tubing, so I can see) Is it suppose to be a lot? Or more like vapors?

Dusty Should be only vapors. How long ago did you run the car on the road? Could be a lot of things causing the problem. Maybe bad gas if you haven't run it in a while. Possible condenser gone bad. Moisture in the distributor?
Start with examining plugs, lean mixture will be light color on electrodes, dark would be too rich mixture. Note which cylinder the plug came from..

I haven't run the car on the road, still figuring out getting a clutch pedal. I took the engine out of another car I had, and put it into a different body. When I first connected everything and started it, it ran good.
Then a couple times after that there was a little popping, then it seems to be more every time.
Now plus oil coming up that vent tube. What would make oil get up through the canister and up the tube?

Since you have moved this engine from another car and didn't say anything about the new engine running before the switch I would start going thru a tune up to make sure all the specs are in line with factory requirements. That will give you a base line to start your trouble shooting. Difficult to pinpoint a problem by shotgunning all possible problem areas.

You should not be able to see oil ( fluid state in the tubing)

Try disconnecting the vent tube right at the wye fitting. Let the end going to the front of the engine vent to the air (open). Plug the wye (going to the carbs) so you wont get a bad vacuum leak and see what happens. Not sure that will help but easy to eliminate as a problem. How bout timing? Did you move the distributor at all? All plugs getting spark?

Good Luck

Merry Christmas

The engine was from another running car I had, and like I said it seemed great the first couple times I started it after the swap.
I didn't move the dizzy, at all.
I just checked the spark plugs, before going to work. They are blacker then black, and wet. So clearly way rich. I'll have to see if each has good spark.
I was thinking about doing what you were saying taking the tube off the carbs, and capping them to see if the oil comes up the same way.
Thanks

I removed the Y tube from the carbs and capped them off no change in how it ran. Still a lot of popping or maybe it's backfiring.
I didn't notice oil coming up the tube though.
But when starting it today gas came flowing out the overflow nipple on the carb. Only seemed to be on one of them. The one where the gas inlet line connects. It's never done that before.
It just seems to be getting to much gas.
