Hi Guys: Well I have been trying to get the wiring straight so I can re install the motor and transmission!I bought a new over drive switch and cover for the shift knob.I could never get either of them to fit seems like the After market stuff is pure junk! Both parts broke !When I pushed the new harness wire into the switch one leg broke and the cover was to small for the shift knob.I am really bum out on that stuff.
I am thinking of buying a new shift knob and locating the over drive switch in the dash instead of on the shift lever.I am thinking of getting a switch with a light in it when its engaged in the overdrive position.
Question is has anyone else done this ?I am thinking of instaling the switch just above the heater fan switch think this is a good place for the switch??Thanks,Bill
This is on a MGB 79 model RB Car!

The OD switch on my '72 is on the wiper stalk - I'm used to it there, but I wired in a light here (not yet in as pictured). This was the "seat belt" warning light; I always know when I have my seat belt on, but not always when my OD is on. winking smiley

EDIT: I used a green LED instead of a regular lamp.

Thanks!I am going to go ahead and get the switch moved to the dash !I thought it would be best to have a lighted switch so you would know when it was in overdrive.
I would not have thought about changing it as I have now wasted about 50.00 for junk.

Oh, yeah! If you're going to move the switch to the console, a lighted one is ideal!

No need for a light, but why not.
I have put a stock OD switch and relocate it to the center console as such: (the switch on the far left)

I have a 1971 MGB. Would like to know if a Miata high back seat can be exchanged without major modifications?

Lee, you should probably start your own thread instead of asking about Miata seats in an overdrive thread. But, the answer is yes, they can fit. However, the first generation seats (pre 98) are better due to not being as high. These also have the speakers in the headrest. Do a "search", an advanced search would be even better, and you'll find a great deal of info on the subject, including installation instructions.

In my 66 it is in the original spot to the left of the gas gauge with the crook shank switch I can just reach it with a stretched finger Hans still on the wheel. For me I think ideally the switch should be reached with out taking hands off the wheel or very close.

Can somebody explain to me the usefulness of an OD light please because I'm afraid I just don't get it !

If you have the presence of mind to be thinking "is it on or is it off", and be glancing down at a light for confirmation, then how can you not already know ?

For those with OD only in 4th it's even easier just by the feel of the car or a glance at the speedo/rev counter

Sure we've all forgotten to switch it of at one time or another, myself included, but enough to warrant installing a light, no.

I have OD on 2 of my Bs both are on the wiper stalk --I have installed a light in the console as an indication that OD is engaged in case in my old confused mind I should forget .
I had a brand new Volvo P1800 in 62 and it had an OD light so I was used to one and and just because BMC & Leland were too cheap to install one --I DID !

Mine should be on the stalk but that was gone when I bought the car, tried a few places. Ended up putting the switch underneath the shifter sock, sticking out on top. Flick switch with pinky finger. I didn't like it on dash because I had to take my eyes off the road to find it.

I had the later shift lever on my 4 synchro/OD transmission installed in my '67 b. I changed back to the early style chrome shift lever do to arm problems and mounted the hooked style OD switch in my console just in front of the shift knob. My hand falls right into place when shifting, so going into and of OD requires just a slightly movement of my finger against the switch. RAY
