I am re-doing a '58 coupe, I ordered the flexible braided hose from Moss which has the same threaded fittings on both ends that fit the fitting on the block. This does not fit my union to connect with the steel line that goes to the back of the gauge. Am I missing an adapter or is there another source of flex lines with the correct thread fittings for my union? Or is my union non-original?

Wrong adapter, looks like somebody grafted something to the original.

I'll order a new junction. I thought that might be my problem, as this car had a prior owner engine transplant.

Both ends of both pieces should be 1/8th pipe thread. Male on the brass adapter and female on the flex hose. World Pac lists the hose part # AHH6554 Landover MD has one in stock. They only sell to repair shops but any one with an account could get you one.

No. Both ends of the oil pressure gauge hose are straight threaded flare nuts. You can spin them down with your fingers, tighten the last half turn with a wrench. The seal is on the inside of the end of the port with a male cone in the hose fitting.

Barney,
So if I have removed a faulty braided oil hose pressure line and replaced it, I do not need to worry about priming or recalibrating oil gauge? Also , do I need to bother with using teflon tape on the male fittings before attaching the hose?

Thanks

These are flare nut fittings on the hose ends, no tape required.

The gauge will work with out bleeding the line, but you will see quicker gauge response if you let the air out of it, Disconnect the small pipe from back of the gauge, and hold it over (or in) a catch vessel. Run engine until it stops bubbling and slowly oozes just liquid oil with no air. Feel free to bleed it long enough to get clean oil. Switch off engine, and reconnect pipe to gauge.

Keep in mind that this tube connection to back of the oil pressure gauge has flat faces at the abutment joint. There is supposed to be a small leather washer for a sealing gasket. See item 27a here:

Not all will leak without the gasket. My car has been running without the leather washer for most of its life, mostly because for a long time I didn't know it was supposed to be there. Someone called it to my attention once (in 1997), having found a bit of oil in the carpet. Tightening the fitting stopped the oil leak. Sometime later I discovered there was supposed to be a gasket. I now keep one or two as spare parts, but I still don't remember ever installing one.
