Previously I've used Wix filters, but quit when they started having the thread problems. It always took 4 1/2 quarts to fill the oil up.
Now I'm using Pureone from Purolator. Thread on nice and easy. But today I put exactly four quarts in after an overnight drain of the sump.
The oil level shows it to be maybe a pint high. Anyone else notice this? I know the Wix was larger, but it don't look to be THAT large!
Kind of odd, I'm thinking.

This car is now very nearly completely done. Sure to find something else, but not now.........And 12 years later, I'm starting to fix things that were new when we built the car. It's pretty well de-bugged!

This may not help, but at least it's a data point for your comparison.
When I was using NAPA Gold filters, it took exactly 4 quarts to reach the full mark on the dipstick. I switched to the Purolator 20195 and it still takes exactly 4 quarts to fill. And that's with an oil cooler.

First, I did run the car after filling the oil. The water pump had gotten real noisy, (didn't leak, but it would have soon) so I changed that out today. I ran it for two minutes dry to seat the bushing, and then for about 10 minutes after the coolant was in it. So the filter is full.
And after an hour or so of sitting, the oil is on the "A" in max. Strange.
Chris, I think the NAPA and the Wix are the same filter. And I am now using the Purolator 20195. No oil cooler.
Still dunno, guess I won't lose any sleep over it. Moving on to the Pertronix ignition now!

Interested in getting rid of the TR-6? Had any ideas of a 4.3 litre MGB with an automatic trans?
Good to see you around again, my friend!

Wayne,
I am still using the WIX 51068 oil filters without issue. I have found that the initial fill is exactly 4 quarts. However, after starting and running I find that a have to add an additional half quart. I have always assumed the filter anti flow back valve holds some of the oil from returning to the sump.

Don't think it hurts anything to put 4 quarts in, but mine takes 3 quarts and 20 ounces to fill to max (no oil cooler). That's with a 74 engine and oil pan and a Purolator filter (filled).

Well, it's still a curiosity to me! Anyway, moving on now. But I now know to only put in four quarts.

I use a 3/4" cap screw to check the thread on any filter I stick on the car. Have found some that were a bit too tight for my liking, don;t remember brand. But I don't "stock" NAPA filters when i can get Wix and others for less $
