Just bought my first MG- 1976 Midget. Been reading the site for the past few weeks and really appreciate the wealth of knowledge being brought here.
I have a question on oil filters. I see lots of anti-Fram, pro-Wix and NAPA gold, but there are so many part numbers listed for both the Wix and NAPA filters... which is the correct filter? Are there multiple options from each manufacturer, and what benefits are received from each of them?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

The first thing that you have to know is whether or not the adapter to allow you to use a spin on filter has been installed.
I just changed my oil for the first time in my 79 and used a Mobile 1 (M1-209) filter and Valvoline VR1 20W-50 oil. Both because they are reported to be the best and I intend to keep my little car for a very long time.

You'll find multiple choices from most vendors. Some are the same size but different quality (e.g. Purolator PureOne vs their regular "classic" line)
here's the Purolator recommendation http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/resources/Pages/ApplicationGuideResults.aspx?mid=70&modid=1739&yid=49&make=MG&model=Midget&year=1976
Some have the same quality and diameter and thread (2.98, 3/4-16 according to Purolator), but different lengths/height (PureOne PL20195 is 4.74" height vs PL10017 is 3.75". And if that isn't enough differences, within the same family, you'll find different relief valve specs (PureOne PL20195 is 12-15PSI, PL10017 is 8-11). Soooo - pick one and change it often. I just put a PL20195 in our 76 last week, replacing the Napa Gold that was in it before.
I hope you get as much enjoyment out of your 76 as my son and I get out of ours (technically his, for now)

Lucky son - this is my son's first car (got it a year ago when he was 16) and he saved up from his lifeguard job to get it. He got a car, I got a hobby. We're both happy with it.
I see you have a 1976 - here's a tip - one day, your starter will begin to have a mind of its own and start trying to engage even when your key is not in the start position. Find the #9 diode on this diagram and remove/replace it. It's in the glove box. Other than that, it's all good.

Is the VR1 20/50 you're using non synthetic? This is what I have bought as well but no where on the bottle does it state of its synthetic or non synthetic?

Valvoline makes both a conventional VR1 racing oil and a synthetic VR1 racing oil. The conventional VR1 comes in a silver bottle. The synthetic VR1 comes in a black bottle and says "Synthetic" right on the front of the bottle.

Thanks for confirming. I have been buying the correct VR1 in silver bottle. Employee at auto zone/auto part stores swore silver bottle VR1 was synthetic because it was racing oil (he said).
Thanks all for the feedback!

both options for midget 1500 are spin on , but there is an adapter available to move to a better , more common filter. ayour parts store can get you the adapter for about 4 dollars , so I would be tempted to just order the adapter , get the correct for adapter filter and oil and install the adapter if needed. the oil filters if you have the adapter the center hole is larger.
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you
