Okay, finally got some time to install Moss tapered bearing and this doesn't seem right. I was testing fittings the bearings to get the shims right and well this is as far as I got. I didn't want to force the bearing on. What do you think?

Are there inner and outer bearing? I don't know much about older midgets but I agree that does not look right.

Josh,

The inner and outer bearings are different. All Spridgets from '58 to '79 use the same bearings.

So can they be easily confused or is the difference great enough to rule that out?

Inner and Outer bearings cannot be interchanged. I have seen this before, even though the spindle is TAPERED there is a "SLIGHT" ridge from the Taper to the straight part. PolisH the spindle with 400 grit WET/DRY sandpaper and some WD40 , especially right at the ridge. DO NOT FORCE THINGS / GO SLOW.

Agree that some fitting is going to be required. Like to know how it all goes since I was thinking of giving the tapered bearing kit a try. Does it retain the distance piece between the bearings? If so that would lock the inner race and a slip fit is what you should have.

Kurt.

Sprite and Midgets have always used BALL BEARING / Bearings. NOT TIMKEN TAPERS> I have used TIMKENS for over 30 years on Sprite/Midget, especially for Autocross cars. We used to buy them individually from local suppliers before Moss started selling the kits. The bearing should SLIDE onto the spindle SMOOTH< BUT SNUG. Again, DO NOT FORCE, if it gets stuck on crooked, you will kill it getting it off. GO SLOW.

Kurt,

Yes you need the spacer for the same reason you need it with the ball bearings. You also will probably need shims to get the tapered bearings adjusted properly.

Thanks all. I'll try the 400 grit and some WD 40 see if I can make it work.
I would be curious if anyone else has had the same issue with the new batch of Moss bearing. They were out of stock for sometime while finding a supplier. At least that's what I was told.
