Windscreen rubbers.....

So I'm at the point of my tear down that I removed the windscreen last night. Since this GT has less than 5000 miles on it and it sat in storage for over 30 years, I'm pretty sure it is the original windscreen and rubber.

As I went through the process, I cut along the rubber (well, it was more hard plastic than rubber at this point lol) so that I could safely extract the filler strip pieces that we all know was made from Unobtanium. After all 8 pieces were removed, I found that under the metal filler strips, was a hardened rounded rubber piece that was laid in a u channel in the rubber seal and was a single piece that went all the way around. The rubber seal however, came out in 8 pieces, 4 corners, top, bottom and both sides. Before I even took the glass out you could see that the rubber seal was not a single piece like normal replacement rubbers.

Is this typical construction of an original windscreen rubber seal?

Looking forward to the response on this. I've been playing with the thought of taking my 67 GTs original windshield out and replacing the rubber as it too is very hard now and breaking off in areas.

Do you have any photos you can post?

"so that I could safely extract the filler strip pieces that we all know was made from Unobtanium"

What are these "unobtanium" pieces? They might also appear to have been written about here (but for the rear screen) - Roy has not yet responded to my question. Granted mine's a '79 GT but still.

As to your question on one piece or several, mine came out in several - same hard rubber issue - but it looked to be originally a one piece just like its replacement I bought. I managed to keep all my trim bits intact on removal save for #7 here which is the one I refer to in the link. I just had Leacy send me a replacement along with new seals and interlockers. The thing I'm most interested in is when I come to reinstall both screens how these seals and interlockers are going to be fit wise compared to oem.

Yes, I have pictures but they are on my digital SLR. I was dripping with sweat and too tired to walk it upstairs to my office and upload them to the PC. I'll upload some tonight.

The replacement filler strip will come as a single piece. Martin Mcgreggor has a larger diameter filler strip available that makes installing the chrome finishers a little easier.

First I've heard of the filler being in multiple pieces.

The round filler piece was one piece, it was the actual rubber seal itself that was in pieces.

If you look closely you'll see that just like the chrome trim the seal is comprised of 8 separate parts bonded together to make one whole, yours has just fallen apart.

Mmmm I must not have looked too closely at either the hardened one I took out nor the one Leacy sent me as a replacement. Still I'm left wondering about the "unobtanium" pieces.

My mistake...it's only the REAR chrome strips that aren't available, apparently the front chrome strips are readily available.

If you went back to my #3 and clicked on the hot links you would have gotten to #11 here - still available according to M-E but at a price. Martin's got them too but given their size they're too big to post so no free shipping.

Barrie,
Moss also list the rear trim with pricing but I think it's NLA?

Clay back on the link I have at #3 I noted that while M-E still showed pricing perhaps they were unavailable but the site hadn't been updated. However Leacy are pretty quick at noting stuff as OOS - the trims are not currently shown as such. I guess if Connery wants them he'll need to start emailing suppliers.

I don't need them, I have two complete sets front and back. All I need is new rubbers.

Oh - your comment about unobtanium got me going (as they're not as far as I can see). Whose rubbers have you bought?

Haven't bought any, still in the tear down stage. Still have a lot of metal work in the engine compartment, sandblasting, and painting to do before I start buying new parts winking smiley
