The MGB is better looking, and the Mk1 MGB had a much more elegant interior. But the Datsun's 150 hp and a 5-speed, with Japanese quality sure is appealing. I wonder if there are transplants of the Datsun 2000 engine and transmission into MGBs. The Datsun 2000 was always a car I lusted for, on the list with a Sunbeam a Tiger and a 356 coupe.

Had a 2000 back in '75. The engine and transmission were really good; the rest average. I like my Bs better (alliteration aside).winking smiley

To me, the Datsun was just plumb ugly. Never had any urge to own one

Your memory is not so good. I agree about the extra HP and one more gear but the 'quality' had not yet been established, particularly from Datsun.

But a car buddy way back, had one of these Datsun cars, a 1500cc? and I recall it being same as or more so troublesome than my B at the time. The gearbox was like the B no synchro on first. winking smiley
FWIW I think it was a nice car, I remember the seats were way more comfy to the B. These were not so plentiful, (east Canada) as the BMC offering so not many were around at the time.

Not as 'modern' as the spec would lead you to believe. Engine was based on 50s Mercedes 4cyl tech. Very few cars had the 150hp engine(side draft Solexes). Most had the 135hp Japanese SU carb engine. Not fast.....and goofy looking...especially the 'tall screen' model.

2000 is only good if you are only about 5'4".

The Datsun is almost a clone of British cars. The 510 was almost exactly an Austin. Even the Z was still heavy British. Quality was getting better but their rust control was worse. The 2000 was very generic in style, no doubt. It was a "nice" car. The difference is their follow through was the 240Z and what wan MG's response? Bean counters cutting everything.

The 2000GT is one of the top 10 prettiest cars ever made in view. It looked like a Japanese XKE. LOVED the covered headlights!

Those Datsuns appeared here as the Datsun Fairlady. They were largley ignored. Having owned a Nissan Patrol and unkillable Datsun 1000 for my daughter I am a bit of a fan Datsun /Nissan. When I bought my 67B in 1991 I could see the Fairlady was a good contender but not the magic / support / clubs / people of the MG. So an MGB it was. I still have it, and my wife has the MGBGT - never regretted the choice.

I drove a couple of them back in the day and they reminded me more of the MGA than MGB. Maybe it's because the A and the Datsun have frames.
They would look nicer with a lower seat height and lower windshield.

I had the feeling of sitting on the Datsuns vs MGBs which feel like sitting in them.

Rod,
Good description.
The Z3 feels like that to me as well.
My wife got one when they first came out and I always felt exposed, like I was sitting too high.

My now-ex-brother-in-law had a used Datsun 1600 (the earlier version of the Datsun 2000) way back in the early 70's. He let me drive it, saying that it had the same 95 horsepower as the MGB, but Japanese horses were obviously smaller. It didn't handle near as well as our 1969 MGB. Road like a buckboard. It was also cramped inside. Goofy-looking tail lights as I recall. You could watch the rust creep over it as it sat in the driveway. He bought it because he couldn't afford anything better.
