Replacing front springs on my 72 B. These were in the spring pans but I don't see them in the parts diagrams. Are they needed? Where in the pan do they go? Help...

They go in the garbage. They look like pieces of a broken spring coil.

Might be a dumb question but.......are the pieces the same diameter as the springs? The curve the same radius as the coil?

If they are I'd say broken pieces of spring.

Edit....J Baz beat me to the post.

Your front end was lowered by 1/4 inch+, with broken springs.
Good move on replacing them.

I originally suspected they were broken sping pieces but the replaced springs weren't missing any parts and they are too uniform in size to have broken in virtually the same spot on opposite sides of the car. I did not put them back on the car though.

It does happen; with age early 2000 VW Golf/Jetta OE strut springs have a bad habit of breaking in the same spot on both sides of the car.
