Replacing the bottom seat foam and webbing on my '79 MGB. There is a liner made of thin foam and nylon sewed to the inner edges of the seat vinyl. As you can see, it's in pretty bad shape. How much does the liner add to the firmness/stability of the seat bottom. Should I leave it as is, tear it out, or replace it with something else?

Thanks,

I'm not sure, but I believe that foam 'backing' is part of the vinyl cover, not necessarily a separate item.

I replaced my vinyl covers last Fall and the foam layer (also quite worn) went away with the cover material.

I used a fairly economical (read cheap) replacement, and although it had some sort of backing it was not
very substantial, or very foam-like, even though they are very comfortable.

Kind of depends on your plans for your car Joe. If doing a restoration, I'd replace the whole cover. If you're just trying to clean up a driver, perhaps you can cut the foam out and use a trim adhesive to affix a new layer. Or do nothing. winking smiley Your call, no wrong answer here.

Don't tear it ouot. You might want to glue it back down to the cover though then re-install the cover.

My 1972 B had a sort of cardboard or vinyl liner between the straps and the seat foam. I replaced the torn and warped cardboard (or vinyl) liner with a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet. It worked ok but I believe it raised the seat height. There is not much clearance between the seat and steering wheel so If I were to do it again I would have used some thing thinner.
