Marilyn finally made it out of the garage. Lot of cob webs to blow out after a nine year rebuild. Got her running pretty good and down to the gas station for some high test. Filled the tank, went in to pay, notice gas, a lot of gas pouring out of the tank's sending unit. Apparently I didn't get it sealed properly, rushed home and let most of 40 bucks flow out of the tank before I got it sealed somewhat (or all gas drained out).

It is nice to see her on all fours again.

You don't need high test. You could have filled it with 87 octane and only wasted 35 bucksgrinning smiley

Are you talking about the car or Scarlett?

Take your choice. I was actually referring to Marilyn being "on all four" but I can see it works both ways. (LOL) The garage stinks to high heavens this morning and later today I'll jack up the rear end, pull the right rear wheel and see if I can properly seal the sending unit. I filled the tank in order to see if the new 'solid-state' sending unit was actually working. I still don't know. I was so panicked by the gas flowing all over I never looked at the gauge.

I just installed mine and have not filled it yet. I just put in rubber washer and rotated until it hit stops. Is there a sealer or something you should use? I would rather not experience this.

Mark,
That's all it should need. Just make sure all 3 tabs are in the slots as you lock it in

Thanks Bernie. I installed a new tank so I installed sending unit while out of car. I thought it went in well but after reading this post thought I should ask. Mark

Well the car is back on jack stands, rear wheel off. I found the old clamping ring (it's original to the car and tank, Primrose Yellow OEM paint overspray) and cleaned it up. It may be that the new one which came with the sending unit does not quite match the 67 tank. Or I'm just a dumb current owner. I'll get it replaced as soon as I can stand the smell.

An hour later, after B-fast and such, I attempted to seal the sending unit with the supplied clamping ring. No joy, it just keep popping off at the final tap. Put the tank's original clamping ring on and it sealed the first go. So fingers crossed, after I repair all the paint on the tank which bubbled off, and correct the overspray, I'll try one more time again to fill the tank and take that first test drive over a mile.

So just a caution to others doing this, the new ring may not seal like the original. $40 bucks in wasted gas says stay with what your tank knows,

I had the same problem. Couldn't get the new locking ring to work so I used the old one. Perfect fit and no leaks.

Goes back to what I've believed in for a long time (and posted awhile back). It's a good idea to keep your old (i.e. - original) parts and rebuild, re-use or just keep them handy as "some" of the parts now being made may not be the same (or as good) as the old stuff!

Maybe go fill a gas jug and then pour some into the tank in the garage. Better than driving with fuel pouring out all the way home.

Hummm, all MGB's can run on 87 octane? Mine would sound like a steel drum band on fuel with that low of a rating, but then I'm at 11:1 compression.

Dave, you've done a lot of exterior work on Mar1lne... what have you done to the motor in your car?

I'm with your way of thinking. Many years ago, tried using regular and mid-range LEADED gas, pinged like heck on acceleration and hills and sometimes kept dieseling when shut off.

I know that some carb / ignition adjustments might help but I'll stick with using premium unleaded with a lead substitute / upper cylinder lubricant.

Has worked for me for many years and not much sense to change now!

Bob
