I like to sip my whiskey at room temperature, neat. I think I'll try adding a few drops of water and see if I can taste any improvement.

A few drops of water into a measure of malt whisky does indeed alter the flavour. Try a few drops, then a few more and find where the sweet spot for the drinker and the particular whisky is. Its very pronounced, the flavour change, with a cask strength malt, but any malt 'opens up' a bit with a little water. I will now put words into practice with a little Laphroaig. Cheers Jay, thanks for reminding me that the sun was over the yardarm.

Mick, How many times do we test it to make sure we find the sweet spot? smoking smiley. Could reach the point where we would pass it, but then we wouldn't care anyway! grinning smiley PJ

I like Scotch, but I've never developed a taste for Bourbon. However, on at least one of the bourbon distillery tours & tastings I've taken, they made a special point of telling us that bourbon is best when mixed with a little water.

I still didn't care for it.

In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.

Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

When your bourbon is 86 proof it has more than a little bit of water already added. I always thought a tablespoon of Coke in a glass of bourbon was all it needed

I have a bottle of scotch aged in a rum barrel. Don't know why I bought it as I dislike rum. Balvenie.

Neat it is not good. A small cube of ice or two, and, it's going to be a short evening. What a difference.

I put two small cubes in all mine.

I don't do drugs, that's why I enjoy the non alcoholic versions of whiskey. I can sip it and enjoy the taste, but not feel the effects of that drug alcohol. Much like drinking an ODouls, it's what beer drinkers drink when they are not drinking beer. Also found some good non coke, coke.... I've always hated coke, but always loved the smell... fills my needs.... without the drug component, be them legal and taxed or illegal... keep clean...

I can see the debate widening to include the type of water to add to your whiskey, equally expensive bottled water from the spring of the river Spey ? Presumably not the chlorinated rubbish that comes out of my taps ! Respect to those of you able to drink spirits neat, but it's not for me. Reminds me of an old story of an Irishman pointing a gun at a friend and insisting he drink the Potcheen (a type of whiskey), after drinking it he handed his friend the gun with the words, "now make me drink it"

In yesterdays Times newspaper there was an interesting article next to the reporting of the Charlottesville rumpus highlighting a claim that Jack Daniels No.7 was actually distilled and perfected by a freed slave, Nearest Green, and that Jasper (Jack) Daniels was principally the salesman. The link? His descendants now want the history of the company to be re-written to fully recognise his contribution. Hopefully, this is just journalists being mischievous.

Since we talk about mixing whisky with coke, can I point out that if it is Scottish (as opposed to Scotch), you really shouldn't be mixing with E either. Irish, and that's fine.

Can't understand why i feel so pedantically curmudgeonly this morning.

Well, I guess I have to admit to being a traitor to the cause, I like Irish whiskey, it even makes coffee taste better! The wife makes the best coffee cake, laced with a little Irish whiskey also, man is it good! Can't stand bourbon, tastes like something you might thin paint with! LOL.

Good stuff,

Funny thing. Good distilled products come from most everywhere.

Jack Danials is popular but, kind of cheap. A GOOD bottle of Kentucky whiskey is really peachy.

I like Jamison 12. I assume better Irish whisky is even better.

Bombay Saphire is our house gin. A 5:00. Gimlet!

Not so fond of brandy. Love the bouquet. Hate the taste. Listerine comes to mind.

I really enjoy a single malt neat with a glass of ice water on the side, when you sip the malt, then take a sip of water its almost as if you are taking a second sip of malt. I do shy away from mixing the two.
