Hi,

The oil pan on my car wasn't sealed right; I didn't realize it was slightly bent. Anyway, the guy at the parts store recommended Indian Head shellac. I was able to seal the my Exxon Valdez-sized leak. The leak was coming from oil dripping down the side of the block and wasn't under pressure. I read later, though, that this stuff is more for lower temperature applications. The excess stuff bubbled up on the block and got brittle.

Anyone have experience with this stuff? Even if it doesn't work, at least I know where the leak was.

I only ever used it for the side case of my Muncie 4 speed. It should easily be good for the temps your engine will see.

Oh yeah. The stuff used to be used commonly around here back in the 1950s and 1960s. It will seal stuff up. Back in the good ole days, people would reseal leaking head gaskets with the stuff. It is a bear to get off the next time you need to work on whatever you just sealed up with it. It is really difficult to remove. Modern gaskets and alternatives like the RTV sealers have largely replaced it.

But it will most likely seal up whatever you use it on.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like I might have a winner. I don't care if it's ugly or hard to remove. I have to pull the engine to remove the oil pan anyway.
